It is begun and not bad. Claire in a hat, etc., outdoors; she has a great deal of character and poses well.
Well —
But I am sorry not to have my white portrait with the bare arms and neck — a figure study, and a beautiful figure study, with a stunning arrangement. A house dress, all in white... Well, it was beautiful; I shall do it again.
My excessive imagination took me on a journey to Palestine with Bastien before dinner — for I shall go to Palestine next October.
Well, I sent to enquire after this old invalid — he is better. They have just told me through the speaking-tube; on hearing the whistle I guessed it concerned this painter, for no one comes after dinner whose arrival could interest me... And the time it took to go from the library to the speaking-tube in the studio... such agitation that my forehead and chin were damp. But why? It is not anxiety — I am not anxious about anyone’s health, since death itself... is not a misfortune, nor... So it must be that I am exhausted, and I think of him continually, and he has become the object of my dreams — and after all I do not care.
No — these fevers, these agitations, these forces... must not resolve themselves into some silly love or other, but into a great work. I shall make studies and a painting, and in October I shall go to Palestine and paint my Holy Women...
That fool Rosalie thinks I might be anxious about Jules’s health, and hurried to tell me he is better.

Porte-voix (speaking-tube): a tube running between floors of a house, used by servants to relay messages between rooms; a standard fixture in prosperous 19th-century households. ↩
