Another day in Sourny. Alexandre negotiates with Dina about the sale of her share; we let him talk, and when he is quite convinced he has turned our inexperienced heads, we take up the thread again as though he had said nothing. I cannot follow all his subtleties, but the essential thing is to hold the price: thirty-five thousand roubles. He will only give thirty thousand. But I hold firm.

Encore une journée à Sourny. Alexandre traite avec Dina de la vente de sa part, nous le laissons parler et lorsqu'il est bien convaincu d'avoir tourné nos têtes inexpérimentées nous reprenons le thème comme s'il n'avait rien dit. Je ne puis le suivre dans toutes ses finesses mais l'essentiel, c'est de maintenir le prix: trente cinq mille roubles. Il ne donne que trente mille. Mais je tiens ferme.

The abuse and the brigandage are unimaginable! They had concealed the copies of the contracts and deeds made by Romanoff [crossed out: at the same time as he is said to have been] at the period when they claim to prove he was insane — all those acts of sale, leasing, purchase, etc. etc., concluded with numerous persons and recognised as valid. None of the persons who dealt with Romanoff were prosecuted — except his wife, and Maman, and Alexandre, because they are sister and brother. The copies of these contracts are so formidable an argument that they reduce everything to nothing. They will be presented tomorrow. At last — Maman, who was charged with having captured the man's confidence and forced him into marriage with her sister — Maman, the principal accused, will emerge exonerated after twelve years of suffering, humiliation, and threats of prison.

L'arbitraire et les brigandages sont inimaginables ! On avait dissimulé les copies des actes et contrats faits par Romanoff [Rayé: en même temps qu'on le dit] à l'époque où l'on veut prouver qu'il était fou. Tous ces actes, ventes, locations, achats etc. etc. passés avec une quantité de personnes et reconnues valables. Aucune des personnes qui ont traité avec Romanoff n'ont été inquiétées, excepté sa femme et maman et Alexandre parce qu'ils sont sœur et frère. Les copies de ces actes sont un argument tellement formidable qu'ils réduisent tout à néant. On les présentera demain. Enfin maman incriminée d'avoir capté la confiance de l'homme et de l'avoir marié de force presque avec sa sœur, maman la principale accusée, sortira blanche après douze années de souffrances, d'humiliations, de menaces de prison.

The case has been entitled: attempted fraud against the estate of M. Romanoff. And this without evidence — simply on the complaint filed by his heirs. After twelve years of harassment and slander, everyone is found innocent. But how can the administration compensate for the moral damages caused by this horrible affair? One would have to bring an impossible lawsuit against the then-incumbent minister, etc., etc., etc. It would have no end. But admire this!

L'affaire a été intitulée : *attentat d'escroquerie contre la fortune de M. Romanoff.* Et cela sans preuve, simplement sur la plainte portée par des héritiers. Au bout de douze années de tracasseries et de calomnies, tout le monde apparaît innocent. Mais comment l'administration peut indemniser pour les préjudices moraux causés par cette horrible affaire. Il faudrait intenter un procès impossible contre le ministre alors régnant etc. etc. etc. Cela n'aurait pas de fin. Seulement admirez !

Yesterday Alexandre presents himself to Tolkatch and asks to make his observations on the completed inquiry — which is his right. Tolkatch replies that he has no observations to make, since he is only involved in the case by accident and is there only to "keep company with the others."

Hier Alexandre se présente à Tolkatch et lui demande à faire ses observations sur l'enquête qui est terminée. C'est son droit. Tolkatch lui répond qu'il n'a pas d'observations à faire attendu qu'il n'est mêlé au procès que par accident et n'est là que pour "tenir compagnie aux autres".

— But you old scoundrel — if that is so, how is it that I have been for twelve years [under such abominable accusations] involved in a case with a shameful heading!

— Mais vieille canaille si c'est ainsi, comment se fait-il que me voilà depuis douze ans [sous le coup d'accusations aussi abominables] mêlé à un procès avec un "en tête" honteux !

— Be quiet, replies the other — you are nothing but a brat!

— Taisez-vous, répond l'autre, vous n'êtes qu'un *gamin !*

When Alexandre's last election was annulled, it was with great difficulty that my father, who presided, managed to prevent the public reading of the grounds... They wished to read out and print that such-and-such had not been confirmed in his position, being charged with fraud and attempted crimes against the property of M. Romanoff. One asks oneself how all of this can be conducted in such a manner!

Lorsqu'on a cassé la dernière élection d'Alexandre, c'est à grand peine que mon père qui présidait a réussi à interdire la lecture publique des raisons... On voulait lire et imprimer qu'un tel n'est pas confirmé dans ses fonctions comme étant incriminé d'escroquerie et d'attentat contre les biens de M. Romanoff. On se demande comment tout cela peut se passer ainsi !
