I sleep through the day — such gaiety here... In travelling dress, on the point of leaving. We stayed yesterday to wait for Alexandre and his wife, who were to come as far as Kharkov1 with us. I have reconciled Paul and Alexandre. And this evening they are talking again of staying, everyone irresolute — maddening!

Je dors le jour tellement c'est gai ici... En robe de voyage sur le point de partir. Nous sommes restés hier pour attendre Alexandre et sa femme qui devaient venir jusqu'à Karkoff avec nous. J'ai raccommodé Paul et Alexandre. Et ce soir on parle encore de rester et tout le monde indécis, embêtant !

J'ai fait part de mes réflexions sur les mariés aux mariés mêmes et ils ont l'air plus gentils déjà je vous assure.

This reputation for influence that people give me! Nini swears she has turned Lihopoy's head — that he told her he was lost and capable of becoming even a drunkard. In exchange for his easel I gave him my photograph in costume, and he claims to get up ten times in the night to look at it. In short, he does not know what is the matter with him — he feels lost, Nini swears it — and she told him he might marry me if he were a king's cousin and a millionaire.

Maman est haineuse pour Paul, ce qui fait que je vais aimer mon frère. Enfin M. Patchenko dit à sa fille que je lui suis chère parce que je suis bonne pour elle et que quelque sentiment que les autres éprouvent ils feront en apparence comme moi. Cette réputation d'influence qu'on me fait ! Enfin Nini jure que j'ai tourné la tête à Lihopoy, qu'il lui a dit qu'il était perdu et capable de devenir même ivrogne. En échange de son chevalet je lui ai donné ma photographie en costume et il se lève dit-il dix fois la nuit pour la regarder.. Bref il ne sait ce qu'il a, il se sent perdu, Nini le jure, elle lui a dit qu'il pourrait m'épouser s'il était cousin de roi et millionnaire.

If it is true it is absurd — he would do far better to marry Dina.

Si c'est vrai c'est absurde, il ferait bien mieux d'épouser Dina.
