Yesterday a domestic storm: Father was rather sheepish when, in front of him, I repeated to Maman yesterday's conversation.

Hier orage domestique, le père a été assez penaud quand devant lui j'ai répété à maman la conversation d'hier.

The Princess is indignant in her customary paternal way — heaven has given me everything, she says, and I am not happy.

La princesse est révoltée d'un air paternel comme d'habitude, le ciel m'a tout donné, dit-elle, et je ne suis pas contente.

For some months now I have been going grey. Going grey at my age is fairly rare — [Crossed out: one finds] it is my deafness, I know, that has done this.

Moi depuis quelques mois je blanchis. Blanche et à mon âge c'est assez rare [Rayé: on trouve] c'est ma surdité je sais qui a fait cela.

M. Patchenko and his daughter arrived at noon. I thought worse of him than he turns out to be, and it is astonishing that a man so seemingly respectable should behave so detestably toward Paul, and above all toward his wife, whom he leaves without a penny in a household not her own.

In any case they are comfortable here, and he comes on visits as though he had been blameless — and now that he has been well received he will have no desire to act otherwise, assuming he ever had such a desire.

Enfin ils sont bien ici, et il vient là en visite, comme s'il avait été irréprochable et maintenant qu'on l'a bien reçu il n'aura aucun désir d'agir autrement si on suppose qu'il ait jamais eu ce désir.

I have finished my painting, which is better than anything I have done before — the head especially, which I redid entirely three times. But not having drawn with sufficient care it turns out that the arm is a little short and there is awkwardness in the pose — and those faults are not forgivable in me, since I have what is needed to avoid them. I should have abandoned it more than once, for this painting... well, it would have been as good to make several studies rather than finish it with that arm too short. But I had always hoped that my father would buy it from me, having given me no present and I having come here... but it does not appear to be forthcoming.

J'ai fini mon tableau qui est mieux que ce que j'ai fait jusqu'ici, la tête surtout que j'ai refait entièrement trois fois. Mais n'ayant pas dessiné avec assez de soin il se trouve que le bras est un peu court et de la gaucherie dans la pose, or ces défauts-là ne me sont pas pardonnables attendu que j'ai ce qu'il faut pour les éviter. J'aurais laissé ça là plusieurs fois car ce tableau ... Enfin autant aurait valu faire plusieurs études que d'achever ce bras trop court, mais j'avais toujours l'espoir que mon père me l'achèterait, ne m'ayant fait aucun cadeau et moi étant venue ici... mais ça n'a pas l'air de venir.

I am immediately wounded; had nothing been said I should have passed over it in silence, but it is insupportable that one speaks of this in my presence. Bashkirtseff, whom he fathered by a peasant woman, and whom Maman, on her last stay, admitted into her presence, even lodging her on the same floor as Maman... It is — it is charming. I am wounded by the mere thought that this... girl is nearby and might by chance catch sight of me when I go out...

père, à qui il a fait cadeau d'un petit bien à côté (cent arpents) et qu'on ne peut empêcher de venir sur la place publique. C'est que moi je suis aussitôt froissée, si on n'avait rien dit j'aurais passer ça sous silence mais c'est insupportable qu'on parle de cela devant moi, je quitte donc la place en me couvrant de mon ombrelle et de mon voile pour ne pas que cette créature voit mon visage et aussi la fille naturelle de M. Bashkirsseff qu'il a eue d'une paysanne et que maman lors de son dernier séjour a admise en sa présence et on l'a même logée au même étage que maman... C'est, c'est joli. Encore on accepte l'enfant de l'homme aimé, du marié, mais l'enfant après mariage est si outrageant, si horrible que je ne puis dire. Je suis blessée rien qu'à l'idée que cette... fille n'est pas loin et peut par hasard m'apercevoir lorsque je sors...

The gentleman3 had made himself scarce. But you must admit it is detestable to be exposed to such encounters.

Monsieur s'était sauvé. Mais convenez qu'il est détestable d'être exposée à de pareilles rencontres.
