Monday, 13 June 1881 – 1 June

I have begun a life-size peasant woman, standing, leaning against a fence woven of dry branches like a basket. Straw and planks have been laid on the ground to protect me from the damp, and a small portable pavilion of two rooms has been put up there, so that I am admirably installed.
Maman, Paul, Nini, Papa, Michel, Dina and Sperandio stay there part of the day. Dina has dressed up as a peasant woman (her nose powdered); it suits her, but she has that inspired, defiant, lascivious air which disgusts me greatly. I believe there were some flirtations with Michel this winter, for it is obviously because of his arrival that she has put on that air today.
Michel, for that matter, is icily cold. All the same, that expression of face and body is disgusting; there is something in it that causes me a kind of shame, a sort of pain, of unease. Michel brought flowers and deliberately forgot to offer any to Dina. He brought me canvas to paint on and is infinitely more amiable with me than with her, perhaps because I am absolutely indifferent. Michel, the cat, Nini or anything else; with everyone the same indifferent and almost disdainful benevolence. that is not a reason
I should very much like to be able to say that I have put on this bearing deliberately, but I believe, because it is what I feel. I am sad and discouraged, which makes me awkward
This evening we played roulette. I try to do anything at all in the evening so as not to read, which tires my eyes.
