This morning Julian received the letter whose draft is here [missing], accompanied by an old red tulip. As we have often laughed together about Louise Michel,1 it has great effect.

Ce matin Julian a reçu la lettre dont voici le brouillon, [manque] accompagnée d'une vieille tulipe rouge. Comme nous avons souvent ri ensemble de Louise Michel, cela fait beaucoup d'effet.

The head of Brisbane (Alice) is painted in two hours, and Julian tells me to leave it. And other times one spends eight days producing something wretched... Part of the apron and the bodice are also painted.

La tête de Brisbane (Alice) est peinte en deux heures de temps, et Julian me dit de la laisser. Et d'autres fois on reste huit jours à faire une saleté... Une partie du tablier et le corsage sont aussi peints.

The perspecteur [sic] comes and preaches at me for twenty-five minutes the necessity of submitting to his infallible rules. Tony then?... and I? This man cannot be wrong, since they are fixed rules — but Tony, but I?

Le perspecteur [sic] vient et me prêche pendant vingt cinq minutes la nécessité de me soumettre à ses règles infallibles. Tony alors ?... et moi ? Cet homme ne peut se tromper puisque c'est des règles fixes, mais Tony, mais moi ?

I know nothing about it. Let us not go deeper, so as not to tire ourselves at the moment when we need great freedom of mind to quietly make the masterpiece. But I opt for the mathematician.

Je n'en sais rien, n'approfondissons pas pour ne pas nous fatiguer au moment où il nous faut beaucoup de liberté d'esprit pour tranquillement faire le chef d'œuvre. Mais j'opte pour le mathématicien.

Thirty-two days until the Exhibition.2

Trente-deux jours jusqu'à l'Exposition.

That mad princess is back from Nice and is at ours with her two children; she came yesterday too with Bojidar. They leave early and Alexis stays until we throw him out... in view of the atelier.

Cette folle de princesse est revenue de Nice et est chez nous avec ses deux enfants, elle est venue hier aussi avec Bojidar; ils s'en vont de bonne heure et Alexis reste jusqu'à ce que nous le flanquons à la porte... en vue de l'atelier.

I like him well because he finds me "stunning" and so "well-curved"3 — truly too well-curved; God gave me too much of it, so I am unique. He also finds me pretty — I know this through indirect channels and from his conversation.

Je l'aime bien parce qu'il me trouve "épatante" et tellement "galbeuse"[sic] vraiment trop galbeuse, le bon Dieu m'en a trop donné aussi je suis unique. Enfin il me trouve aussi jolie, je sais cela par voies indirectes et puis dans sa conversation.

It adds spice to our conversations.

Louise Michel (1830–1905): French anarchist and feminist revolutionary, "the Red Virgin of Montmartre," prominent in the Paris Commune (1871). By 1881 she was a celebrity of the radical left. Marie and Julian apparently joked about her dramatic persona — hence the red tulip sent with the letter as a knowing reference. ↩

Galbeuse: Marie's invented or half-heard word from galbe (curve, contour); used admiringly of a shapely figure. She treats it with ironic pride. ↩
