We are invited to dinner at the Juvisys’ with E. de Girardin.
Old Mother Gavini, then Saint Amand, then Alexis; I had only just come in. But with Alexis, who does not speak loudly, I am very ill at ease.
Ah! that was all I needed in life!
Julian and Tony — Julian especially, since he has seen it more often — are pleased with the picture and have told me so, and Julian told me so several times, and I was pleased with it myself and greatly fired up. Now it is falling flat; I am no longer satisfied with my composition, and it is no use telling myself over and over that Tony has seen it twice and told me that it is very well arranged, amusing, and that nothing must be changed. Julian tells me to change nothing. I no longer have confidence. Julian too tells me to change nothing. In short, everyone thinks it good, one group in the middle ground particularly pretty, but I am not pleased. I see it differently; there must be no more thought of alterations, it is too late... besides...
All the same, it is curious that so many things in this picture shock me and shock neither Julian nor Tony... The truth is that they think I cannot do better and do not want to let me bog myself down by making things harder than they are...
