A passage read in the Gospel finding itself extraordinarily in agreement with the [blacked-out word: thought] that was guiding me, I have a return toward fervor and toward miracles, Jesus Christ and my exalted prayers of former days. For some time I had been content with a God, and my faith was very pure, very severe, very simple. But now I am returning to a more familiar religion, more... consoling, more in keeping with the fears, miseries, and baseness of my nature.
