I have been running around the shops and ordering dresses as if I needed them. The eighteen Biarritz dresses are mouldering in the wardrobes. I sent two to Wladimir's daughters. I would have sent more, but the other sixteen were in very plain fabrics, with no trimmings, and were only possible on me. Sending them would be almost making fun of someone. But dressing is an art, and even though I go nowhere I dress — for myself, for the love of art.

J'ai couru les boutiques et je me commande des robes comme si j'en avais besoin; les dix-huit robes de Biarritz moisissent dans les armoires. J'en ai envoyé deux aux filles de Wladimir. J'en aurais envoyé davantage, mais les seize autres étaient en étoffes très simples, sans garnitures et n'étaient possibles que sur moi. Les envoyer serait presque se moquer du monde. Mais s'habiller est un art et, bien que n'allant nulle part, je m'habille, pour moi, par amour de l'art.

Monsieur Gavini has just left — he is in Paris by chance. I complain about Biarritz and very stupidly nearly burst into tears. This evening we shall go to the Circus.

Monsieur Gavini sort d'ici, il est à Paris par hasard. Je me plains de Biarritz et tout bêtement manque de pleurer. Ce soir nous irons au Cirque.

Géry and Saint-Amand came yesterday in our absence. Gabriel has been appointed secretary in Rome. Lucky man!

Géry et Saint Amand sont venus hier en notre absence. Gabriel est nommé secrétaire à Rome. L'heureux !

Saint-Amand says Gabriel adores l'enfant... The child is me. But I am also very fond of Gabriel. We love each other in friendship — you see that it is possible... provided one sees each other rarely, and then... he would quite happily marry me for my money, and I would quite happily marry him for his, if he had enough. Such is life.

Saint Amand dit que Gabriel adore l'enfant... L'enfant, c'est moi. Mais, moi aussi j'aime beaucoup Gabriel. Nous nous aimons d'amitié, vous voyez bien que cela est possible... à condition de se voir rarement et puis... il m'épouserait bien pour mon argent et moi je l'épouserais bien pour le sien, s'il en avait assez. Voilà la vie.

Géry senior joins us at the Circus. I enjoy myself. Despite the pain, despite the sorrows, when one is young there is an animal need for laughter, for gaiety.

Géry, le père, nous rejoint au Cirque. Je m'amuse. Malgré le mal, malgré les chagrins, il y a quand on est jeune un besoin animal de rire, de gaieté.

Tonight it is Gavini and Géry, Gabriel's father, and when there is no one it is Coco or nothing at all — I amuse myself looking at myself in the mirror.

Ce soir c'est Gavini et Géry, le père de Gabriel, et quand il n'y a personne, c'est Coco ou rien du tout; je m'amuse en me regardant dans la glace.

Rosita came to see me; my aunt was out at the same time as Saint-Amand and Cerny. These last two we take to the Bois, and in the Allée des Acacias we get out to walk on foot, as is the fashionable thing to do. I am wearing a dark green costume, hat, shoes, and gloves to match. A figure that turns everyone's head.

Rosita est venue me voir, ma tante était sortie et Saint Amand en même temps et la Cerny. Ces deux derniers nous les emmenons au Bois et dans l'allée des Acacias, nous descendons marcher à pied comme c'est le chic. J'ai un costume gros vert, chapeau, pieds et mains assortis. Une taille qui fait retourner la tête à tout le monde .

Coquelin crosses our path and exchanges a greeting with Saint-Amand, who promises to bring me all of Léon's friends. We often talk of it for a laugh. And then Saint-Amand tells me whenever someone finds me attractive, which amuses me.

Coquelin nous croise et échange un salut avec Saint Amand qui me promet de m'amener tous les amis de Léon. Nous en parlons souvent pour rire. Et puis Saint Amand me dit quand quelqu'un me trouve bien et cela m'amuse .
