I take lessons from the Black woman, who is excessively funny with her Spanish-French pidgin.

Je prends des leçons de la négresse qui est excessivement drôle avec son jargon espagnol-français.

Together we make a tableau; my library has been embellished. I placed the desk against the wall so as to free the bookshelves, the divan facing the desk, near the divan an immense armchair in embroidery and blue plush, placed a little to form a circle with the divan; between these two is a nightstand artistically draped with an Indian shawl and old green plush that serves as pedestal for a mediocre terracotta that nonetheless appears graceful in the shadow of the immense palm that extends its branches above the armchair; it is a ravishing corner when one glimpses it arriving from the drawing room; and from the divan one sees the desk, beside the desk the fireplace covered with greenery, an easel, etc. Near the palm, the harp, and opposite, near the fireplace, the tea table with the gleaming silver on a dark background; it is infinitely better now. Near the desk an old-style armchair, so that when one enters I have only to make a small movement with this chair to find myself facing people (the door and desk on the same wall) near the pedantic desk, with books as background, among paintings and plants, and legs and feet in view instead of being cut in two as before by that black wood. Above the divan hang the two mandolins and the guitar.

Nous faisons tableau ensemble, ma bibliothèque a embelli, j'ai mis le bureau contre le mur de façon à dégager les rayons de livres, le divan en face du bureau, près du divan un immense fauteuil, en broderie et peluche bleu, un peu placé pour former cercle avec le divan; entre ces deux il y a une table de nuit artistement drapée d'un châle des Indes et de peluche vieux vert qui sert de piédestal à une terre cuite médiocre mais qui paraît gracieuse dans l'ombre de l'immense palmier qui étend ses branches au dessus du fauteuil; c'est un coin ravissant quand on l'aperçoit en arrivant du salon; et du divan on voit le bureau, à côté du bureau la cheminée couverte de verdure, un chevalet etc. Près du palmier la harpe et en face, près de la cheminée, la table à thé avec l'argenterie reluisante sur un fond sombre, c'est infiniment mieux à présent. Près du bureau un fauteuil genre ancien, de sorte que lorsqu'on entre je n'ai qu'un petit mouvement à imprimer à ce fauteuil pour me trouver en face des gens (la porte et le bureau sur le même mur) près du pédantesque bureau, avec les livres pour fond, entre des tableaux et des plantes, et les jambes et les pieds en vue au lieu d'être coupée en deux comme avant par ce bois noir. Au-dessus du divan sont suspendues les deux mandolines et la guitare.

Put in the midst of all this a blonde, fair young girl with very small, fine hands veined with blue, and this tall Black she-devil showing her teeth and singing.

Mettez au milieu de cela une jeune fille blonde et blanche aux mains toutes petites et fines veinées de bleu et cette grande diablesse noire montrant les dents et chantant.

Unexpected visit. Lise Kondareff, who is here for a few days with a governess, no doubt to settle some debt of Maman's. She used to employ her for that four years ago in Nice. She is already eighteen.

Visite inattendue. Lise Kondareff, qui est ici pour quelques jours avec une gouvernante, sans doute pour régler quelque dette de maman. Elle l'employait à cela il y a quatre ans à Nice. Elle a dix-huit ans déjà.

Monsieur Georges came to the atelier to ask for M. Julian, for whom I had charged him with a commission when leaving for Biarritz. But Amelie knew very well that I knew Julian was absent; besides, she knows all her dirty stories from the atelier maid, who knows them from Rosalie.

Monsieur Georges est venu à l'atelier demander M. Julian pour lequel je l'avais chargé d'une commission en partant à Biarritz. Mais Amélie savait bien que je savais Julian absent, du reste elle sait toutes ses sales histoires par la bonne de l'atelier qui les sait de Rosalie.

What to say and what to do? Who then informs her of everything, even our plans! Of this poor Biarritz that I may not see, my dear Maman hurrying to return. If my daughter wrote me a quarter of what I have written (not insolence, but complaints), I would have left at once...

Que dire et que faire ? Qui donc l'instruit de tout, de nos projets même ! De ce pauvre Biarritz que je ne verrai peut-être pas, ma chère maman se pressant de revenir. Si ma fille m'écrivait le quart de ce que j'ai écrit (pas des insolences, mais des plaintes) je serais partie tout de suite...
