I accept a man’s elevation to supreme power when that man is a hero like Napoleon I; I admit that a sort of dictatorship may be conferred upon a superior and capable being, but his children are nothing. I do not even want power for life; that would show one fears failing one’s commitments, on both sides. If the elected leader behaves well, there is no need of an oath for him to remain chief.
J’admets l’élévation au pouvoir suprême d’un homme, quand cet homme est un héros comme Napoléon Ier, j’admets qu’on confère une sorte de dictature à un être supérieur et capable, mais ses enfants ne sont rien. Je ne veux même pas de pouvoir à vie, cela montrerait qu’on a peur de faillir à ses engagements, de part et d’autre. Si l’élu se conduit bien, il n’est pas besoin de serment pour qu’il reste le chef.
I put on a peasant woman’s hat from here; it looks very well on me, making me resemble a Greuze. I telegraphed and they are sending me lawn1 dresses for the heat here --- and now it is very cold. I am beginning to see the landscape; until this evening I was irritated by the filthiness of the food, irritated because eating is a vile preoccupation from which one cannot escape.
Je me suis coiffée d’un chapeau de paysanne d’ici, cela me fait très bien, me faisant ressembler à un Greuze. J’ai télégraphié et on m’envoie des robes de linon pour les chaleurs d’ici, et voilà qu’il fait très froid. Je commence à voir le paysage; jusqu’à ce soir j’étais énervée par la saleté de la nourriture, énervée parce que le manger est une préoccupation ignoble et à laquelle on ne peut se soustraire.
