We dine at the Mirandas'. A charming mezzanine in a new building, comfortable service, a well-kept household; elegant guests.

Nous dînons chez les Miranda. Charmant entresol dans une maison neuve, service confortable, maison bien tenue; convives élégants.

Monsieur and Madame Brocheton (extremely wealthy bankers who move in the best circles; they called on us the other day). M. and Mme So-and-So, then another gentleman I don't know — a young, very wealthy Spanish diplomat who came to the house — then M. Heredia de Lavermor, secretary at the Spanish embassy; M. de Rojas; Maman; and I.

Monsieur et Madame Brocheton (des banquiers fort riches et très répandus; ils nous ont fait une visite l'autre jour). M. et Mme X. je ne sais qui, Monsieur encore je ne sais qui, diplomate Espagnol, jeune et très riche qui est venu à la maison, puis M. Heredia de Lavermor, secrétaire d'ambassade d'Espagne, M. de Rojas, maman, moi.

But in the middle of dinner my head begins to swim; I see everything spinning around me and barely have time to rush to the drawing room to see myself in a mirror, pale as a corpse, and then to throw myself into an armchair in the bedroom and half faint.

Mais voilà qu'au milieu du dîner la tête me tourne, je vois tout tourner autour de moi et n'ai que le temps de me précipiter au salon pour me voir dans une glace pâle comme une morte et puis me jeter dans un fauteuil de la chambre à coucher et m'évanouir à moitié.

It is a delicious sensation — but it would have been better to have it at home. Five minutes later I was as gay and strong as possible.

C'est une sensation délicieuse mais il aurait mieux valu que cela se fît à la maison. Cinq minutes après j'étais aussi gai et forte que possible.

A pleasant evening; we danced among ourselves. M. de Rojas (minister from Venezuela) — a widower with a daughter, like Miranda — waltzed... as did everyone else, except Maman and Mme So-and-So. Then Mme Brocheton, who is beautiful and charming, and I improvised nonsense at the piano on a libretto that M. Heredia was improvising at the same time.

Une soirée agréable, on a dansé entre soi, M. de Rojas (ministre du Vénézuela) un veuf à fille comme Miranda, a valsé.... tout le monde du reste sauf maman et Mme X. puis Mme Brocheton qui est belle et gentille et moi avons improvisé des bêtises au piano sur un libretto de M. Hérédia [qui] improvisait, en même temps.

But in the afternoon I spent a good hour at Tony's, where I was introduced to Robert-Fleury père, who was most amiable and told me he spent four years drawing before painting. After the father left, we talked, and I smoked a cigarette.

Mais l'après-midi j'ai passé une grande heure chez Tony, j'y ai fait la connaissance de Robert-Fleury père qui a été fort aimable et qui m'a dit qu'il est resté quatre ans à dessiner avant de peindre. Le père parti, nous avons causé et j'ai fumé une cigarette.

As for the painting I brought, he found it good and told me to continue. Julian also said that with my Salon piece it is the greatest effort I have made....

Quant à la peinture par moi apportée il l'a trouvée bien et me dit de continuer. Julian a dit aussi qu'avec mon Salon c'est le plus grand effort que j'ai fait....
