I painted a little head of a Parisienne in a large black hat and otter-skin coat, a bouquet of violets, her head tilted to the side, laughing. I spent a few hours on it, but it is small, and then it is for the poor...

J'ai peint une petite tête de parisienne en grand chapeau noir et manteau de loutre, un bouquet de violettes, la tête penchée de côté elle rit. J'ai mis quelques heures à le faire mais c'est petit et puis pour les pauvres...

La d'Hervey de Saint Denis, la Montebello et la Trechern sont tout ce qu'il y a de plus insolent au monde, elles sont belles, jeunes, à la mode. Si elles sont aimables avec vous, soyez aimables avec elles, mais si non prenez garde. Je crois qu'elles seront très aimables, vous êtes jeunes, jolies, gentilles, élégantes. Mais ne parlez pas de vos républicains, ce serait terrible, vous seriez perdues, ce serait une horreur, une tache d'huile. N'en parlez pas ! Ne dites pas que vous en connaissez et s'il en vient n'affectez pas de les reconnaître. Du reste ils ne sont pas assez bons pour vous pour que vous en parliez, à bon entendeur salut, n'est-ce pas Marie ?
