I had a long conference with old Julian on the subject of my Salon; I submitted two projects which he finds good.

J'ai eu une longue conférence avec le père Julian au sujet de mon salon, j'ai soumis deux projets qu'il trouve bien.

I shall draw them both; it will take three days, and then we shall choose. I am not strong enough to pull off brilliantly a portrait of a man, an unrewarding subject, but I am strong enough to execute a figure (life-size, of course) and some nude, which, as Julian says, attracts me like all those who feel strength in themselves. This man amuses me; he builds a future on my head; [Words blacked out: he will make me] this, that if I am good, and since our last interview I am good. Next year it will be a portrait of a famous man and a painting. "I want you to break from the ranks all at once!"

Je les dessinerai tous deux, cela prendra trois jours et alors nous choisirons. Je ne suis pas assez forte pour me tirer brillamment d'un portrait d'homme, sujet ingrat mais je suis de force à exécuter une figure (grandeur nature bien entendu) et du nu ce, qui comme dit Julian m'attire comme tout ceux qui se sentent une force. Il m'amuse cet homme, il bâtit sur ma tête un avenir; [Mots noircis: il me fera] ceci, cela si je suis sage et depuis notre dernier entretien je suis sage. L'année prochaine ce sera un portrait d'homme célèbre et un tableau. "Je veux que d'un coup vous sortiez des rangs ! "

For this year, I, "the finder," have found this: a woman before a table, her chin resting on her hand and her elbow on the table, reading a book. Effect of light on very beautiful blond hair, titled: La Question du divorce by Dumas; this book has just appeared, and the question fascinates everyone. The other thing is simply Dina in a chemise dress of white crepe de Chine, seated in a large antique armchair, her arms relaxed and her fingers interlaced. A very simple pose, but so graceful that I hastened to sketch her one evening when she happened to be thus and I was trying to pose her. It has a little Recamier air, and so that the chemise is not too indecent I shall put a colored sash.

Pour cette année moi "la trouveuse" j'ai trouvé ceci. Une femme devant une table, le menton appuyé sur la main et le coude sur la table, qui lit un livre. Effet de lumière sur de très beaux cheveux blonds, intitulé: la question du divorce par Dumas, ce livre vient de paraître et la question passionne tout le monde. L'autre chose c'est simplement Dina en chemise robe de crêpe de Chine blanc, assise dans un grand fauteuil ancien, les bras abandonnés et les doigts entrelacés. Pose très simple mais si gracieuse que je me suis empressée de la croquer un soir qu'elle était ainsi par hasard et je cherchais à la poser. Cela a un petit air Récamier et pour que la chemise ne soit pas trop indécente je mettrai une ceinture de couleur.

In this second project, what tempts me is this complete simplicity and beautiful passages to paint. Oh! It is a true voluptuousness.

Dans ce deuxième projet ce qui me tente c'est cette simplicité complète et de beaux morceaux à peindre. Oh ! c'est une vraie volupté.

Today I am on top. I feel superior, great, happy, capable.

Aujourd'hui je suis en haut. Je me sens supérieure, grande, heureuse, capable.

I believe in a future. At last, all that, there is nothing to say.

Je crois à un avenir. Enfin tout cela il n'y a rien à dire.

The little dog is Soutzo at present.

Le petit chien c'est Soutzo à présent.

I do not trouble myself about it; I send him away when I want or go home leaving him with the others.

Moi je ne m'en inquiète pas, je le renvoie quand je veux ou je m'en vais chez moi en le laissant avec les autres.

Kiki sat today; when he sits, Dina or the others are there and we chat all the time.

Kiki a posé aujourd'hui, quand il pose Dina ou les autres sont là et on cause tout le temps.

There is a painful execution to perform: Tarente. We knew he had been expelled from the Mirlitons for not paying, he behaved badly, he was posted, etc. But despite that, we still saw him, for he had the impudence to show himself. But yesterday Mme Gavini told me it was no longer possible to see him; she charged someone to tell him never to dare present himself at our house. "I took that upon my own bonnet," she said. It seems he does things so abominable that it is impossible to explain them.

Il y a une pénible exécution à faire, Tarente; on savait qu'il a été chassé des Mirlitons pour n'avoir pas payé, il s'est mal conduit, on l'a affiché etc. Mais malgré cela on le voyait encore car il avait l'impudence de se montrer. Mais hier Mme Gavini m'a dit qu'il n'était plus possible de le voir, elle a chargé quelqu'un de lui dire de ne plus oser se présenter chez nous. "J'ai pris ça sur mon bonnet", a-t-elle dit. Il paraît qu'il fait des choses si abominables qu'il est impossible de les expliquer.

"Even if you had been married for five years, it would be difficult to explain."

"Vous seriez mariée depuis cinq ans que ce serait difficile à expliquer".

And if what I do is bad, Julian will tell me: "I know you well enough to know that one can tell you so without circumlocution."

Et si ce que je ferai serai mauvais Julian me le dira, "je vous connais assez pour savoir qu'on peut vous le dire sans détours".
