[One line cancelled]
I have taken sketches for my Question du divorce. And in the evening we go to the theatre with the Gavinis. It seems that the other evening we made an enormous impression at the Opera. A heap of people ask and inquire:
"It is useless," says old Madame Gavini, "I am willing to introduce you, but they will not marry you; I shall have you invited to the party these ladies will give, but I warn you: nothing doing."
"I had a good mind," she adds, "to add: because you are penniless wretches with your 15,000 francs of income."
