Monsieur de Morgan sends a painted cone of pink satin, full of bonbons. Gabriel, the pure one, the exquisite, a pretty candy box with five or six pounds of bonbons. I send a handkerchief with lace to Berthe.

Monsieur de Morgan un cornet de satin rose peint, plein de bonbons. Gabriel, le pur, l'exquis, une jolie bonbonnière avec cinq ou six livres de bonbons. J'envoie un mouchoir avec de la dentelle à Berthe.

I went to the studio in the morning so that having worked on New Year's Day I shall work all year. Afterward we went out to pay calls and to the Bois. Paul left this evening at seven o'clock; Maman alone accompanied him to the carriage. The railway makes one sentimental. I let him leave without more emotion than if he were going into town, and if I had gone as far as the station I would certainly have wept. Maman comes to join us at the Theatre des Nouveautes. Paris en action, a very amusing revue. The pure one meets us there; Paul had telegraphed him (we were supposed to go yesterday and Gabriel the chaste had promised himself he would see us there).

J'ai été à l'atelier, le matin pour qu'ayant travaillé le premier de l'an je travaille toute l'année. Après nous sommes sortis faire des visites et au Bois. Paul est parti ce soir à sept heures, maman seule l'a reconduit jusqu'au wagon; le chemin de fer attendrit. Je l'ai laissé partir sans plus d'émotion que s'il allait en ville et si j'étais allée jusqu'à la gare j'aurais certainement pleuré. Maman vient nous rejoindre au théâtre des Nouveautés. Paris en action, revue très amusante. Le pur nous y retrouve, Paul lui avait télégraphié (nous devions y aller hier et Gabriel le chaste, se promettait de nous y voir).

Ma tante dit que la seule chose à faire c'est de me le présenter et puis au bout d'une quinzaine de jours lui demander s'il croit que c'est moi qui lui ai écrit. Ce serait trop fin pour ce vibrion que je traite d'empaillé et d'imbécile, ce à quoi Gabriel répond qu'il voudrait bien être à sa place.

In the afternoon we met Multedo; we had the carriage stopped and warmly congratulated him.

Dans l'après-midi nous avons rencontré Multedo, on a fait arrêter la voiture et nous l'avons chaudement félicité.

Only I blushed, and he too, very much. He is not at all in love with his fiancee, I assure you... But he is content. Just think, he is marrying into the household; life will cost the young couple nothing; all their income will be for themselves.

Seulement j'ai rougi, lui aussi beaucoup. Il n'est pas du tout amoureux de sa fiancé, je vous assure... Mais il est content. Songez-donc, il entre dans la maison, la vie ne coûtera rien au jeune ménage, tout leur revenu sera pour eux.
