Yes, I have my... unpleasant days. We went skating, Berthe, Paul, Alexis and I, at the club; there we find Lafond and Cherubini. Blanc has persuaded Alexis that he could easily overcome Berthe's virtue given her husband and her unhappy marriage. Naturally, at twenty one is very happy to hope for a mistress like Berthe even if one does not love her at all.
In sum all this is not made to amuse me much, I skate and even with much grace but I do not amuse myself much, for I feel that I am a sort of comrade for Berthe and that she believes herself number one and me number two.
I console myself with a black velvet costume, a Rembrandt hat, undulations of the waist, and the looks with which the public of both sexes honors me. At the end I leave with Paul, Alexis stays.
We are already getting into the cab when I see Alexis arriving.
— I am leaving with you!
— What is the matter?
— The matter is that no matter how much of a spineless creature one is, these things are not done!
Berthe had told Lafond to come have something and forgot Alexis who was left alone like an animal. So the child is furious! He detested Berthe, she disgusted him with her sharp tongue! If he went to see her it is because he met her at our house and he is going to distance himself from her a notch and so on and so forth!
I reply with jokes and advise him to take care, not to trust Blanc too much who can be mistaken and not to fall for it too much because at the end of three months of servitude which will have brought the woman an escort, an admirer more, she can send him away... unscathed, which would not be agreeable.
I know that he cared no more about Berthe than I about Joseph before I was told that he admired me...
What is the name of that Shakespeare comedy in which two young people love each other because their heads are filled with such ideas in this way? Besides this young Serbian had a serious passion begun at seventeen for Mlle de Sampieri whom they married a year ago, a marriage which is the cause of violent despair on both sides. Until now the boy speaks of it trembling and claims he will have no other love in his life. O Duke of Hamilton! Yet no, it is not the same price as they say, with me there was nothing and here they had sworn eternal love... But all this is not the cause of my boredom. Joseph did not come nor the blue fox fur dress either. Now if he recognized me at the hippodrome or at the Chamber he is going to think that it is I who write to him that the blue fox fur dress and the mask are the same person. That is not all, I go to the Gavinis' and I tell them about the Murcie party.
This stupidity earns me fatherly advice from Denis (Gavini). [Words blacked out: Arnaud is] a desirable husband, but one must not appear to be interested in him.
I followed him in the Bois once while with Mme Lancaster; if I want him to take an interest in me I must not appear to pay attention to him, to look at him, to write him anonymous letters.
If he (Gavini) had known that I spoke with Arnaud at Murcie, he would have chatted with him to find out if he recognized me, etc.
I protest against the thing in the Bois and the letters.
— Did he tell you? Was it he?
— Oh! no, no; he never spoke to me of anything, but believe me I know what I am saying.
And I understand nothing of it!!
First let us be fair! I wrote nothing to him, I included him in a series of people for the same joke... What does Gavini mean? What has been told him? Who told him. The hoax about the moves? It is not about that he wanted to speak.
So... the appointments at Murcie, I gave twenty-five of them... and then?
If he were to think that I am the blue fox fur dress... it would be unbearable! Dog's name! When it is not I it is the others... Berthe!! I deserve it, I have only what I deserve. What need have I to shout Joseph from the rooftops!!!
I come home devastated... These are the sort of four-penny disasters of which I have the secret. I recite prayers, tremble at having some unknown, unheard-of unpleasantness and pray to God that it may already be tomorrow. Tomorrow it will be twenty-four hours since all this, I will be calmer.
