I forgot to keep the newspaper with Gambetta's mot; M. de Baudry d'Asson, son of giants, the Vendean, the great hunter before the Lord, mounts the tribune and begins: "In the present circumstances and not wishing to play into the hands of a ministry at bay... M. le President." M. Baudry d'Asson, I urge you to employ a less cynegetic style.

J'ai oublie de garder le journal avec le mot de Gambetta; M. de Baudry d'Asson, le fils des geants, le Vendeen, le grand chasseur devant le Seigneur, monte a la tribune et commence: "Dans les circonstances actuelles et ne voulant pas faire le jeu d'un ministere aux abois... M. le President." M. Baudry d'Asson, je vous engage a employer un style moins cynegetique.

This caused a gaiety that lasted nearly five minutes, the mot could not have come at a better moment. It pleased me all the more because Gambetta is reproached for not having wit.

Cela causa une gaiete qui dura pres de cinq minutes, le mot ne pouvait tomber plus a pic. Il m'a d'autant plus fait plaisir que l'on reproche a Gambetta de ne pas avoir le trait.

The other evening with De Daillens we decided to try a revival of the five women and here is the letter I send him. I am quite afraid this will be useless, but if it succeeded it would be awfully funny, [missing].

L'autre soir avec De Daillens nous avons decide d'essayer une reprise des cinq femmes et voila la lettre que je lui envoie. Je crains bien que cela ne soit inutile, mais [si] cela reussissait ce serait joliment drole, [manque].

This evening artists' dinner. Robert-Fleury, Julian, Bojidar, Alexis, Berthe, and Tchoumakoff. Maman finds Tony very handsome. It is true after all, I thought him short, he is tall and at forty-one does not look more than thirty-two to thirty-four.

Ce soir diner d'artistes. Robert-Fleury, Julian, Bojidar, Alexis, Berthe et Tchoumakoff. Maman trouve Tony tres beau. C'est pourtant vrai, je le croyais petit, il est grand et a quarante et un ans et il n'en parait pas plus de trente-deux a trente-quatre.

They are very funny with Julian. I amuse myself greatly. Julian mesmerizes Dina and Berthe, we attend a session full of interest. We do not separate until half past one and Alexis tells me that Joseph is a handsome male. That too. I have had him before my eyes since Monday. Yes he is a handsome male, perhaps that is why he troubled me. One can see that I read Zola.

Ils sont tres droles avec Julian. Je m'amuse beaucoup. Julian magnetise Dina et Berthe, nous assistons a une seance pleine d'interet. On ne se separe qu'a une heure et demie et Alexis me dit que Joseph est un beau male. Cela aussi. Je l'ai devant les yeux depuis lundi. Oui c'est un beau male, c'est peut-etre pour cela qu'il m'a troublee. On voit que je lis Zola.
