My painting is "much, much better." We did the other day a one-hour sketch for the rankings and this morning one displays them in the small salon and Tony is locked in there, he absolutely refuses to number them saying it is impossible, that the work of an hour is nothing to see and that in the end he is willing to put numbers on them at random or with his back turned. If it is not very serious, it is rather amusing because we were listening at the door and saying heaps of nonsense. Finally he did not want to stay alone and asked that those ladies who had not done the sketch be assigned to him. So it was done, Linsdall had number 1, I took you for Mlle Madeleine, besides I could have given you a worse place, your head lacks skull, as for you (me) you are 3rd I could just as well have put you 1st. This means nothing; another time you will give me your week's studies from which I will rank you. This makes no sense.
With number 3 I will have a very good place for the competition.
My composition is found very good by Julian. At home I find the usual people then M. de Tarente, de Morgan, Turquan, Berthe, etc. etc.
My paintings are going better, this lets me breathe more easily.
Gambetta has returned to Paris.
