Doenhoff is here; he has already come several times, and this evening he dined with us. He finds that my face has grown thinner and that it suits me delightfully. If it did not mean living in Prussia I would marry this good man. He finds me very attractive, and the position he holds is absolutely brilliant. He is a very passable man, and in his manners he is a courtier, a German. And what a contrast with Multedo, who came in the evening.
I was in high spirits, and Doenhoff told Maman that I have too much wit to have a heart. Multedo is either epigrammatic or adoring, whereas the German allows himself only one or two compliments and not too much chatter with young girls. But I like that, because he means what he says...
