The races, but I would not even take up the pen, all this passed flatly for me, had I not to say that I saw up close the Princess de Sagan, nee Seilliere. Finance married to aristocracy. But rarely has a Princess by birth had a better air. They do not find her pretty but they grant her an astonishing air of breeding for a woman who is not well born. She has had much success and the Prince of Wales is said to be her lover each time they meet, recently the Prince led the Princess his wife to Mme de Sagan's. I always wondered at her successes hearing the descriptions made of her:

La finance mariée à l'aristocratie. Mais on lui [rarement Princesse] de naissance a eu meilleur air. On ne la trouve pas jolie mais on lui accorde un air de race étonnant pour une femme qui n'est pas bien née. Elle a eu beaucoup de succès et le Prince de Galles est dit-on son amant chaque fois qu'ils se voient, dernièrement le Prince a menée la Princesse sa femme chez Mme de Sagan. Je m'étonnais toujours de ses succès en entendant les descriptions qu'on en faisait:

Tall, dry, long, a large nose, blonde and infinitely distinguished. It is true, brutally so.

Grande, sèche, longue, un grand nez, blonde et infiniment de distinction. C'est vrai, brutalement.

For me she is one of the most ravishing women I have seen. Much less beautiful than Mme de Pourtales or Mme de Mouchy but more agreeable.

Pour moi c'est une des plus ravissantes femmes que j'aie vues. Bien moins belle que Mme de Pourtalès ou Mme de Mouchy mais plus agréable.

Tall, the shoulders high, thin but graceful. The hair real or dyed, of a golden chestnut blonde color that appears natural.

Grande, les épaules hautes, maigre mais gracieuse. Les cheveux vrais ou teints, d'une couleur blond châtain doré qui paraît naturelle.

A pale and yellowish complexion, [but of an] agreeable tone. No rouge. Gray eyes of a graceful cut and of a sweet and calm expression. A nose strongly aquiline to begin with and then lowering, a nose of a nobility and royal character, the nostrils and the mouth are of an adorable drawing. I do not understand that they say her nose is large, it has the air of beginning like a nose that will go far but by an unexpected [way] which forms as it were an angle and very gracefully it returns to the face. They told me she was ugly. How is it possible. This woman is forty years old, perhaps more, she is adorable.

Un teint pâle et jauni, [mais d'un] ton agréable. Pas de fard. Des yeux gris d'une coupe gracieuse et d'une expression douce et calme. Un nez fortement busqué pour commencer et s'abaissant ensuite, un nez d'une noblesse et d'un caractère royal, les narines et la bouche sont d'un dessin adorable. Je ne comprends pas qu'on dise que son nez est grand, il a l'air de commencer comme un nez qui ira loin mais par une [façon] inattendue qui forme comme un angle et très gracieux il revient à la figure. On me la disait laide. Comment est-ce possible. Cette femme a quarante ans peut-être plus, elle est adorable.

The foot is enormous and loosely shod, either it is exquisite and she fears to damage it or it is ailing... and then farewell to her charms! The Marquise de Galliffet is her intimate and inseparable friend, they say she was beautiful, I do not believe it and she displeases me. Badly made and badly dressed. The Princess de Sagan does not dress well either.

Le pied est énorme et chaussé largement, c'est qu'il est exquis et elle craint de l'abimer ou c'est qu'il est malade... et alors adieu pour les charmes ! La marquise de Galliffet est son intime et inséparable, on dit qu'elle a été belle, je ne le crois pas et elle me déplâit. Mal faite et mal habillée. La princesse de Sagan ne s'habille pas bien non plus.

O sublime Balzac, you are the greatest genius in the world. Whichever way one goes one always finds oneself in his sublime Comedy, it seems he had always come and copied from nature. These two women especially by their provenance, their figure, their life, make me think of Balzac, that great, that inexhaustible, that incredible genius.

Ô sublime Balzac, tu es le plus grand génie du monde. De quel côté qu'on aille on se retrouve toujours dans sa sublime Comédie, il semble qu'il ait toujours venu et copié sur nature. Ces deux femmes surtout par leur *provenance,* leur figure, leur vie, me font penser à Balzac, ce grand, cet inépuisable, cet incroyable génie.

My family returned from the theater. They find Mme de Sagan ugly. It is moreover what everyone says. How then does it happen that I see her so charming. I grant that she is not pretty but with my artist's eye I am seduced by certain qualities of drawing of the lips and the nose with such sharp edges. She has neither withering of the cheeks nor bags under the eyes and then exquisite manners.

Les miens sont revenue du théâtre. On trouve Mme de Sagan laide. C'est du reste ce que dit tout le monde. Comment se fait-il donc que je la voie si charmante. Je veux bien qu'elle ne soit pas jolie mais avec mon œil d'artiste je suis séduite par certaines qualités de dessin des lèvres et du nez aux arêtes si vives. Elle n'a ni flétrissure des joues ni poches sous les yeux et puis des manières exquises.
