Julian came in announcing the death of our Emperor, and I was so overcome by it that I cannot make sense of myself at all. Everyone rose to look at me — I turned white, tears in my eyes, lips trembling. Seeing me always mock everything, the amiable Julian had meant it as a joke; the truth is that some individual fired four shots at point-blank range and the Emperor was not hit.

Julian est entre en annoncant la mort de notre Empereur et j'en fus tellement saisie que je ne n'y comprends rien. Tout le monde s'est leve pour me voir: je devins blanche, des larmes dans les yeux, des levres tremblantes. Me voyant toujours me moquer de tout, l'aimable Julian a voulu rire, la verite est qu'un individu a tire quatre coups a bout portant et que l'Empereur n'a pas ete atteint.

And Julian slapped his thigh and exclaimed that he would never in his life have thought me capable of such emotion. Nor would I. I thank heaven he did not announce the marriage or death of someone else — for I believe it was the moment; I would have trembled at any news at all. In any case, the Emperor does not compromise me — on the contrary, I shall spread the rumor that I am his daughter.

Et Julian se tapait la cuisse et s'ecriait qu'il ne m'aurait jamais de sa vie cru capable d'une telle emotion. Mais, ni moi non plus. Je remercie le ciel qu'il ne m'a pas annonce le mariage ou la mort de quelqu'un d'autre car je crois que cela etait a cause du moment j'aurais tremble a n'importe quelle nouvelle. Enfin, l'Empereur ne compromet pas au contraire je ferai courir le bruit que je serai sa fille.

We went to the horse show. At the Gavinis' we find Multedo and Filippini — but at the show, a crowd and nobody, except Madame Randouin.

Nous sommes allees au concours hyppique; chez Gavini nous trouvons Multedo et Filippini, mais au concours une foule et personne exceptee la Randouin.

I was tired and bored.

Je me suis fatiguee et ennuyee.

Then I went to make my peace with Caroline and order a dress.

Puis je suis allee faire ma paix avec Caroline et me commander une robe.

Bojidar came to dine and to organize my books — he is a little show-off, good-natured, who fancies himself a spoiled child, a character, an original who has seen and read everything, and to whom, like Berthe, extraordinary events are always happening.

Bojidar est venu diner et m'arranger mes livres; c'est un petit poseur bon enfant qui se croit un enfant gate, un type, un original qui a tout vu, tout lu, et auquel comme Berthe, il arrive toujours des evenements extraordinaires.

Speaking of Berthe — she came yesterday.

It is curious how, when I am alone, I am drawn to elegy. I recite Nadaud's "La Maison Blanche" to myself, and weep at the right moments; as for music, Amneris's underscored monologue in the last act of Aida gives me as much emotion as I could wish. It is an extraordinary and admirable piece of music.

C'est curieux comme quand je suis seule je suis portee a l'elegie. Je me recite La Maison Blanche de Nadaud et je pleure ou il faut, quant a la musique, le monologue souligne d'Amneris dans le dernier acte "d'Aida" me donne autant d'emotions que j'en veux. C'est un morceau de musique extraordinaire et admirable.
