Without seeking it, I am to witness the Cassagnac affair! His election is to be confirmed. We miss the parliamentary train by an hour; there is one at a quarter past one. The first face I catch sight of in the station is Cassagnac's — strolling in the company of R. Mitchell, Cuneo, Loqueyssie — his inner circle, in short. I steered my aunt away and, keeping close to the ticket windows, we made our way into the waiting room. I understand now why these people never appeared at our train — they take the second.

Sans le chercher je vais assister à l'affaire Cassagnac ! On va le valider. Nous manquons le train parlementaire d'une heure, il y en a un à I heure quinze. La première figure que j'aperçois dans la gare est celle de Cassagnac se premenant en compagnie de R. Mitchell, Cunéo, Loqueyssie, ses intimes enfin. J'ai entraîné ma tante et longeant les guichets nous sommes entrées dans la salle d'attente. Je comprends maintenant pourquoi ces gens-là ne se montraient jamais à notre train, ils viennent par le second.

Cette rencontre ne pouvait manquer un jour. Il a vu je le crains mon mouvement et ma face détournée pour ne pas le rencontrer. J'ai passé un mauvais quart d'heure. Ce grand diable n'aurait qu'à entrer dans la salle d'attente. Je me serrais les mains dans mon manchon et me pressais les doigts, mais cela ne m'empêchait pas d'être déconcertée et de me coller contre la vitre de la sortie tournant le dos à ceux qui entraient, et si j'étais vue, ne voyant pas comme les autruches. Il va penser que je viens parce qu'on le valide aujourd'hui. Il s'amuserait peut-être à monter dans le même wagon que nous. Je serais retournée à la maison avec bonheur et j'en priais ma tante qui faisait la brave et disait qu'elle n'a rien contre une rencontre avec Cassagnac et qu'elle le saluera si elle le voit... Sans compter... cet homme n'a pas seulement fait part de son mariage et... ma famille est folle, ma parole d'honneur ! Je suis montée en *dames seules* et nous nous mettons de manière qu'en passant Cassagnac ne puisse pas nous voir.

Malgré un fort ennuyeux discours de M. Jean David député du Gers et l'ennemi personnel de Cassagnac, on savait qu'il serait validé. Gambetta le voulait . Au moment du vote, par main-levée, il alla s'asseoir auprès de son père. Le père rajeunit et amincit le fils, ils font bien.

I am ill at ease, with a headache, and as tired as after the journey from Paris to Nice. That man who perhaps believed I was there on his account. The thought tormented me throughout, despite excellent seats in the President of the Chamber's box.

Je suis mal à mon aise, mal à la tête et fatiguée comme après un voyage de Paris à Nice. Cet homme qui croyait peut-être que j'étais là pour lui. Cette pensée me tourmentait tout le temps malgré de bonnes places dans la loge du Président de la Chambre.

On the tram Gavini hands me two tickets for Saturday and tells me I have made a conquest of Monsieur Arnaud (of the Ariège) — son of Madame Arnaud, Gambetta's friend, the fervent republican, the great citizeness, the political salon, the millionairess, etc. She is besides very well known. The young man is Gambetta's secretary and owns twelve million entirely his own. You understand that Gavini is joking — he is such a curious and bustling creature. He noticed that Monsieur Arnaud had been eyeing me, and immediately rushed to question him: what was he looking at and what did he think of it? "They are ladies for whom you have already given me tickets." So Monsieur Arnaud offered him more — for the same box — the pink tickets.

En tramway Gavini me remet deux billets pour samedi et me dit que j'ai fait la conquête de M. Arnaud (de I'Ariège) fils de Mme Arnaud l'amie de Gambetta, la fervente républicaine, la grande citoyenne, le salon politique, la millionnaire etc. Elle est d'ailleurs très connue. Le jeune homme est secrétaire de Gambetta et possède à lui tout seul douze millions. Vous comprenez bien que Gavini plaisante, c'est un être curieux et si remuant. Il a vu que M. Arnaud me lorgnait et aussitôt il s'est précipité le questionner et ce qu'il regardait et ce qu'il en pensait: "Ce sont des dames pour lesquelles vous m'avez déjà donné des billets ". Alors M. Arnaud lui en a offert d'autres, pour la même loge, les billets roses.

We laugh about it a little while returning to Paris with Gavini and Messieurs Dugué de la Fauconnerie and Sarlande. I talk very pleasantly and say some rather amusing things while playing the ingénue. They are married men — so one need not be too stiff. I return home quite merry; our companions were agreeable, and Gavini with his Arnaud recalled to me the old days. He is said to be as beautiful as a Florentine bronze — he is a... what is the name of that hero of Florence in Massimo d'Azeglio's novel? A doublet [Word blacked out: white], a dagger, a toque...

Nous en rions un peu tout en retournant à Paris avec Gavini et MM. Dugué de la Fauconnerie et Sarlande. Je cause très gentiment et dis des choses assez amusantes tout en jouant l'ingénuité. Ce sont des gens mariés, alors on n'a pas besoin de trop se guinder. Je rentre toute gaie, nos compagnons étaient aimables et Gavini avec son Arnaud m'a rappelé le temps jadis. Il paraît qu'il est beau comme un bronze florentin, c'est un... comment se nomme t-il déjà ce héros de Florence dans le roman de Massimo d'Azeglio. Un pourpoint [Mot noirci: blanc], un poignard, une toque...

You are right. Novels have turned my head. One does not do such things. I am angry to the point of tears at what you must have thought — but then, I was far too ordinary. One does not send nonsense copied out by a public scribe to you. And yet it was an exploit that cost me some effort. Whatever the case, I assure you I was not lying; and finding myself quite alone in the face of an impossible situation, a mad resolution to be taken, I prayed to God — and then thought of you, imagining that you would be the fantastical being who, instead of taking me for one of "those society women who, etc.," would understand the soul in torment coming to him as to a priest to ask counsel... You give me counsel that shows me the distance between what we imagine and what is. I shall go to bed early, I promise you — and thus, thanks to you, I shall remain forever young. As for the guidance I need, I shall ask it of the One who suggested I ask it of you.

*Vous avez raison. Les romans m'ont tournée la tête. Ces choses-là ne se font pas. Je suis fâchée jusqu'aux larmes de ce que vous avez pensé, mais aussi j'ai été par trop ordinaire. Ce n'est pas à vous qu'on envoie des bêtises copiées par un écrivain public. Voilà pourtant un exploit qui m'a* donné du mal. Quoi qu'il en soit je vous assure que je ne mentais pas et que me trouvant toute seule en face d'une situation inextricable, d'une résolution folle à prendre, j'ai prié Dieu et puis j'ai songé à vous m'imaginant que vous seriez l'être fantastique qui au lieu de (me) prendre pour [une] "des femmes du monde qui, etc.'' comprendrait l'âme en peine venant à lui comme à un prêtre demander conseil... Vous m'en donnez un qui me montre la distance qu'il y a entre ce que nous nous imaginions et ce qui est.
