This evening the model failed to appear. I posed myself, and while I was on the stand Julian arrived and we talked politics. I enjoy talking with this crafty fellow.
He imagines I live surrounded by deputies and ambassadors and that I have a little court around me... At the studio I mock everything and everyone, I declaim, I rail, I amuse, I make political programmes when I am in good spirits, and people believe that I live as I would wish to live... And Julian tells me: keep going, and the painting — with this staging, you could be unique in Paris. He takes me for a great wit, intelligent, dominating our salon, influential... Ah! it is simply that at the studio I make them believe all of this, without ever telling them so (for the readers of Le Pays).
