Nadine slept in my room, and Paul too — he was afraid of the dead Juliet!
My room was full of cigarettes and trousers... The servants assumed that all three of us had spent the night out.
Blanc was at the theatre, and knowing myself to be looking plain, I removed my gloves and posed — for the hand and a completely lost profile. That old Blanc — he reminds me of the Deceased, and before him I always find myself posing.

Mme Gavini sent me a cushion she had embroidered herself, and I went to thank her for it with Paul, to whom she is lending her husband’s deputy’s medal so that he can visit the monuments more easily. After this visit we go for a drive in the Bois, and the spring breaks in the middle of the Champs-Élysées. There we get out and walk home, where I offer tea, show my jewels and send some cigarettes for Gavini. The Champs-Élysées are amusing on a Sunday, on foot. We met Don Carlos and several gentlemen who know Mme Gavini and who looked at me a good deal.
Several of them know me by sight, one in particular who, whenever he is with Kolemine, always nudges him with his elbow when I pass. Kolemine has a certain admiration for me.
We visited the Museum of Antiquities with Nadine. Ah! How banal and incredible it is — and yet how true: the moderns will never equal the ancients, and Michelangelo was right to cry out, when he wished to add legs to the antique torso: a man cannot continue the work of the gods! I tell you this impression because, coming from me, it cannot be chic, mere convention.
What simplicity and what beauty!
Ah! Greece will never repeat itself.
