The day passes quickly when one goes to draw from eight to noon and from one to five. The journey alone eats up nearly an hour and a half, and then I was a little late, so there were only six hours of work.

La journée est vite passée quand on va dessiner de huit à midi et de une à cinq heures. Le trajet seul mange presque une heure et demie, et puis j'ai été un peu en retard de sorte qu'il n'y eut que six heures de travail.

When I think of the years — whole years I have lost! In anger one is tempted to send everything to the devil... but that would be even worse. Come now, you miserable and abominable girl, be glad that you have at last managed to begin... At my age! Nineteen in a month! I could have begun at thirteen! Five years!

Quand je pense aux années, *des années* entières que j'ai perdues ! De colère on est tenté de tout envoyer au diable... mais ce serait encore pis. Allons, fille misérable et abominable, sois contente d'être enfin arrivée à commencer... A mon âge ! dix-neuf ans dans un mois ! A treize ans j'aurais pu commencer ! Cinq ans !

I would have painted historical paintings had I begun five years ago. What I know only hinders me. It has to be done over from the beginning.

J'aurais fait des tableaux d'histoire si j'avais commencé il y a cinq ans. Ce que je sais ne fait que me nuire. C'est à refaire.

I was obliged to begin the full-face head twice before being satisfied.

J'ai été obligée de recommencer deux fois la tête de face avant de satisfaire.

As for the académie,9 it did itself, so to speak — Monsieur Julian did not correct a single line. He was not there when I arrived; it was one of the students who told me how to begin. I had never seen a life drawing before.

Quant à l'académie cela se fit de soi-même et M. Julian n'a pas corrigé une ligne. Il n'était pas là quand j'arrivai, c'est une des élèves qui me dit comment commencer, je n'avais jamais vu d'académie.

Everything I had done until now was nothing but a bad joke!

Tout ce que je faisais jusqu'à présent n'était qu'une mauvaise blague !

The Portuguese with the long name paid a call. I was at the studio.

Le Portugais au nom long a fait une visite. J'étais à l'atelier.

At last I am working with artists — real artists who have exhibited at the Salon, whose paintings and portraits are bought, who even give lessons.

Enfin je travaille avec des artistes, de vrais artistes qui ont exposé au Salon et dont on paye les tableaux et les portraits, qui donnent même des leçons.

Julian is pleased with my start. "By the end of winter you will be able to produce very fine portraits," he told me.

Julian est content de mon début. "A la fin de l'hiver vous pourrez faire de très beaux portraits", m'a-t-il dit.

He says that his women students are sometimes as capable as his men students.

Il dit que ses élèves femmes sont quelquefois aussi fortes que ses élèves hommes.

I would have worked with the men but they smoke; besides there is no difference. There used to be when women had only the clothed model — but since they do the académie, the nude man, it is all the same.

J'aurais travaillé avec ces derniers mais ils fument et d'ailleurs il n'y a pas de différence. Il y en avait lorsque les femmes n'avaient que le modèle habillé mais du moment qu'elles font l'académie, l'homme nu, c'est la même chose.

The studio maid is exactly as they are described in novels. "I have always been with artists," she says, "and I am no longer bourgeois at all — I am an artist."

La bonne de l'atelier est comme on les décrit dans les romans. J'ai été toujours avec les artistes, dit-elle, et je ne suis plus du tout bourgeoise, je suis artiste.

I am happy, happy.

Je suis contente, contente.
