It is a horror!
Monsieur de Mertens came to make a scene over what Georges owes him. We paid — but there was a scene. What a horror and what a shame. I was present. This gentleman apparently wrote to Nice and said vile things about me to Triphon.
Is that not charming! Me — for Georges's debts. Oh, justice!!
Maman and my aunt were absurd — Maman by crying out:
"— How dared you touch the reputation of a child!"
They are truly foolish and rarely have dignity. Seeing that nothing but nonsense was being said, I declared aloud:
"— The Baron had a narrow escape. When one slanders with servants who have long been in the household, one risks a blow across the mouth. I had thought Triphon more loyal. The Baron was fortunate."
Me! Always me! I am outraged. Oh! outraged as... as if it were someone else.
Paul de Cassagnac holds me in esteem and Baron Adolphe de Mertens slanders me. It is not so bad, after all... yet no matter how much I reason, these cockroach stings wound me and above all revolt me.
The excellent Altamura came to writhe about at our place for a quarter of an hour.
In the evening at the reading room, Mme Doubelt came to greet Maman, to thank her on behalf of Mme Kondareff, her sister, and to exchange every manner of civilities.
Here is another one! One of the leading ladies of Petersburg by virtue of her husband, General Doubelt who commanded a division of the Imperial Guard — receiving grand dukes at her home, attending court... She is in Paris much as the Kondareff is in Nice, waiting for old Basilewsky to buy the notes she has issued to the value of six hundred thousand roubles.
If I were but a great lady I would do everything in the world to remain one. And these women live like bohemians, like students. The debts are paid, they return, and all is forgotten. Scandals, gambling, loans, love affairs, adventures — all of it. Only money is king, you see.
Basilewsky is the son of a church bell-ringer; he discovered gold mines in Siberia on a little field of his own, and now his daughters are princesses and he dines with grand dukes and receives the Emperor in his home.
For the moment she is declining, this good general's wife — but during her husband's lifetime she moved in society at Naples. You understand what I mean. My weakness, my obsession, call it what you will.
