Savitch lunched with us.

Despite the heat, I painted; and Collignon having come, I put together a toilette consisting of a rather Directoire hat, a jacket and a blouse with a jabot32 and open collar, with three small tiered lapels — all that was missing was an umbrella to make me look like Robespierre or someone of that era. Just as I was leaving for the illustrious Bains Georges, I received a letter from Marcuard and Alexandre's portrait — a perfect likeness, as handsome as he. I was very pleased to show it to my aunt, and also to look at it myself: there is no longer any question of love, but I always enjoy seeing so aristocratic a face, such an elegant bearing, those dry and lustreless eyes — and above all that smile so fine and so mocking that it seems at once depraved and childlike, a strange contradiction that constitutes his principal charm.

Malgré la chaleur, j'ai peint et, Collignon étant venue, je fis une toilette qui se composait d'un chapeau assez Directoire, d'une veste et d'une chemisette à jabot et col ouvert, avec les trois petits collets étagés; il ne manquait plus qu'un parapluie pour me donner l'air de Robespierre ou de quelqu'un par là. Au moment de partir pour les très illustres Bains Georges, je reçus une lettre de Marcuard et le portrait d'Alexandre parfaitement ressemblant et beau comme lui. J'étais très contente de le montrer à Madame ma tante et aussi de le regarder moi-même, il n'y a plus question d'amour mais j'aime toujours voir une figure si aristocratique, un air si élégant, ces yeux secs et sans éclat et enfin ce sourire si fin et si railleur qu'il semble perverti et enfantin par une contradiction bizarre qui fait son grand charme.

Grand-maman's portrait is to rest for a day or two, and then we shall make the companion piece to the prince's.

Le portrait de grand-maman va se reposer pendant un ou deux jours et nous ferons le pendant au prince.

We stayed a long time in the garden with Bihovetz and the Anitchkoffs. Grand-papa is so pleased at being able to see people that he perhaps exerts himself too much; he went so far as to dismiss Triphon in earnest — but Triphon pursued him all day on his knees, weeping so violently that we all took his side. Monsieur offered to pay his debts, his journey, all expenses — provided he would go — but Triphon sobbed and threatened to blow his brains out. The thing is, you see, that he is the son of Pierre Ivanovitch, who was coachman for forty years and was called Pierre Ivanovitch out of deference for his devotion and the long service of his entire family.

Nous sommes longtemps restés au jardin avec Bihovetz et les Anitchkoff. Grand-papa est si content de voir qu'il se démène peut-être trop, il est allé jusqu'à congédier sérieusement Triphon, mais celui-ci le poursuivit toute la journée se traînant à genoux et pleurant si fort que nous avons tous pris son parti. Monsieur lui offrait de payer ses dettes, son voyage, tous les frais pourvu qu'il s'en alla mais Triphon sanglotait et promettait de se brûler la cervelle. C'est que, voyez-vous, il est le fils de Pierre Ivanovitch qui a été cocher pendant quarante années et qu'on nommait Pierre Ivanovitch par déférence pour son dévouement et le long service de toute sa famille.

In all of this I have not yet looked properly at the photograph. I am going to attend to it, after sending Rosalie away — and perhaps I shall let some poetic fancy take hold of me that will make me forget the heat and the mosquitoes.

Dans tout cela je n'ai pas encore bien regardé l'image, je vais m'en occuper, après avoir renvoyé Rosalie, et peut-être me mettrai-je quelque poétique fantaisie en tête qui me fera oublier la chaleur et les moustiques.
