So there it is: I shall not tell you that we climbed a height whose name I do not know, and that Pelikan bores me to death. Deaf and half an idiot, and in love with the Zurmüllen woman. What a chore.
A tremendous crowd on the Chiaja, embellished by the presence of my adored Larderel, driving a very pretty horse. I had the courage not to turn round, but Dina saw the manoeuvres of his head. It is only natural; he was not expecting to see me.
As I was looking for him a little later he passed us in grey, on a grey horse, and as Dina was expecting to see him riding a cockerel next, he came back mounted on a brown horse and dressed in brown. Dear boy, how he stands out from all these Neapolitan faces. I know nothing and know nobody, which plunges me into a mild stupor.

Some carnival this is. And all thanks to M. Bashkirtseff, who has crippled my whole year.
If only I could find some admirer.
Si au moins je trouvais quelque amoureux.
Go on! you starving dog.
Va ! chien affamé.

To see Antonelli again only to tell him that it was not I last year! That I do not understand how I could have acted like that, let myself be spoken to like that, said what I said, accepted a strange, equivocal part. That... that when I reread my diary I could kick myself for my conversations with him!
I always seemed to be asking him to marry me, to be supposing that he dared speak to me with some other aim, that I did not understand, that I was absurd, that I am furious!!!!
At the festival I saw [Six lines crossed out] macaroni being eaten. It is worth seeing. We had four francs’ worth eaten, that is to say eighty-eight portions. For such things, as for travel, describing is worthless; one must see.
