I have begun another portrait of Olga, which keeps me busy until five o’clock. Then Mme Anitchkoff comes, and we go for a walk and round the shops.
I have just come back from the pavilion, where I had supper with my family — on our return from Monaco, where there was a crowd, and Angelini. Besides the gambling, people were drawn by a concert given by Mme Conneau.
While reading “Girofla”, I note with satisfaction how cold I appeared. So I was the first to ... besides, he had already exasperated me when I did not yet know him. Only I do not quite understand my conduct, or my thoughts, or my judgements of that time.
O you little donkey! Since you are told that you were sixteen and that it was your first lesson — and you needed one — you imagined that all men were Merjeewskys.
Apropos of that young lord Merjeewsky, let us say that he came today to take his leave and to bring me an immense carved rosary from Lourdes. I received him while I was painting.

I have never been able to rhyme except for that man. And yet this evening Broussais read something at Pelikan’s request2.
