crossed out[Two lines crossed out]
I saw two Cardinal Antonellis in a dream, one all in red, and the other all in black and looking like the devil. I dreamt of Pietro, at the theatre, then... of Audiffret.
My father has become kind again, and I am less anxious.
I do not know how we came to talk of bathing, and I asked Pacha whether he washed every day.
— Yes, he answered, when I am at home.
— Fie! how horrid! So there are men who do not wash every day? Go and love them after that, go and make poetry of them! And... one marries people who wash only every three days! But... and... oh! fie...
Once started I could not stop, and without saying precisely what I have just written, I poured out reproaches, advice and mockery of every kind, and it was Pacha who caught the downpour. In fact... I was perhaps vexed to find him less than I had imagined him.
— And now go to bed!
— Well, I went on, you do not hold out your hand to me!
— Oh! no, why should I? Before, yes, but now you are nothing to me, Michel or Pacha. I was mistaken in thinking better of you. Good night.
Later I wanted to put this scene right, and I sent Amalia to fetch the green man, who did not come, so my little outlay of coquetry went for nothing... a white robe, hair loose... a convent air.
