Nothing to record except a walk with Papa in heavy rain. A day alone with my father — the aunts were in Poltava — and in the evening great excitement on the subject of Gambetta1... I promise to assassinate him... and in the meantime I decide to [blacked out: write to him; inspiration does not come, I shall repeat myself and the monks of Audiffret will serve me with some modifications.

Rien à enregistrer si non une promenade avec papa, par une pluie très forte. Une journée en tête-à-tête paternel, les tantes étaient à Poltava et, le soir grande excitation à propos de Gambetta... je promets de l'assassiner... et en attendant je me décide à [Mots noircis: lui écrjrire, l'inspiration ne vient pas, je me répéterai et les moines d'Audiffret me serviront avec quelques modifications.

Every day I go to bed with my head full of Cassagnac, and sometimes I think of him during the day as well... O idleness, O countryside!

Je me couche tous les jours la tête remplie de Cassagnac, j'y pense même quelquefois le jour... O oisiveté, ô campagne !

Mme Tutcheff avoids me and they say she fears for her lover... the fool. In any case I had the pleasure of seeing this despatch written by my father:

Mme Tutcheff m'évite et on dit qu'elle craint pour son amant... la folle. Dans tous les cas j'eus le plaisir de voir cette dépêche écrite par mon père:

— My [blacked out: brotherly] counsel is that you must come to Gavronzi. Telegraph when?

- Mon [Mot noirci: conseil] de frère est que vous *devez* venir à Gavronzi. Télégraphiez quand ?

Prince Kotchoubey has said that if he did not come today, it is because he will have gone to take his two sons to Odessa.

Le prince Kotchoubey a dit que s'il ne venait pas aujourd'hui, c'est qu'il serait parti conduire ses deux fils à Odessa.

To see him one must wait for his return then. I am eager to efface the stupid impression of yesterday.

Pour le voir il faut donc attendre son retour. J'ai hâte d'effacer la stupide impression d'hier.
