At nine o'clock I was at my father's. I found him in his shirtsleeves, unable to manage his cravat. I tied it for him and kissed his forehead.

A neuf heures jétais chez mon père. Je le trouvai en manches de chemise et ne pouvant parvenir à attacher sa cravate. Je la lui attachai en lui baisant le front.

— "You know," he said, "if fate ever drives you to become an actress in an operetta theatre, within five years you will have a million. That is as certain as the fact that it is now daylight."

— "Tu sais, dit-il, si jamais la fatalité te pousse à devenir actrice dans un théâtre-bouffe, au bout de cinq ans tu auras un million. C'est certain comme ce qu'en ce moment il fait jour".

The gentlemen came and had tea, Pacha too — last evening he was absent, and the servant came to say he was "laid up like an invalid." The others mocked his clumsy attentions towards me, and he takes the slightest thing so deeply to heart that not a word could be got out of him this morning.

Les messieurs vinrent prendent le thé, Pacha aussi; hier au soir il était absent et le domestique vint dire qu'il était "couché comme malade". Les autres se sont moqués de ses prévenances d'ours pour moi, et il ressent si profondément la moindre des choses qu'on n'en tirait pas un mot ce matin.

There has been something of a scandal — judge for yourselves. Paul removed from his album the photograph of my father's actress, and that worthy gentleman, noticing this, removed his own portrait.

Il s'est produit *une sorte* de scandale, d'ailleurs jugez-en. Paul a retiré de son album la photographie de l'actrice de mon père et ce digne monsieur s'apercevant de cela retira son portrait.

— Why are you doing that? asked Paul in amazement.

— Pourquoi fais-tu cela ? demanda Paul tout étonné.

— Oh, just in case — I'm afraid you'll throw out my pictures too.

— Moi, comme ça, je crains que tu ne jettes *aussi* mes portraits.

I took no notice of any of this. But today Paul drew me aside, led me into a room, and showed me his album — empty, save for the woman's portrait only.

Je ne fis aucune attention à cela. Mais aujourd'hui Paul me prenant à part me conduisit dans une chambre et me montra son album vide avec le portrait de la femme, seulement.

— I am doing this to please my father, but I have had to remove all the other portraits from the album — here they are.

— Je fais cela pour faire plaisir à mon père, mais j'ai dû retirer de l'album tous les autres portraits, les voici d'ailleurs.

— Let me see them.

— Laisse-les moi voir.

I selected all the photographs of Grand-papa, Grand-maman, Maman, and myself, and put them in my pocket.

Je choisis toutes les photographies de grand-papa, de grand-maman, de maman et les miennes, et je les mis dans ma poches.

— What does this mean! cried Paul.

— Qu'est-ce que cela veut dire ! s'écria Paul.

— It means, I answered calmly, that I am taking back our photographs, which are here in very bad company.

— Cela veut dire, répondis-je calmenet que je reprends *nos* portraits qui sont ici en trop mauvaise compagnie.

My brother was on the point of tears, tore the album in two, and left. I had carried out the whole operation in the drawing room — it was witnessed, and my father will hear of it.

Mon frère fut prêt à pleurer, déchira en deux l'album et sorti. J'avais opéré au salon, on a vu et mon père le saura.
