Now Doria laughs — laughs outright! The wretched cardinalino has, I wager, told the club that he frightens me. And bigre, he has good reason to laugh. But he ought also to be flattered. To inspire terror in a woman is still something.

Today is the King's name-day — on this occasion there was a great review at the Farnesina, where my dreadful horse galloped so badly. And after the review, soldiers have invaded the promenades.

C'est la fête du Roi aujourd'hui, à cette occasion il y avait une grande revue à la Farnesina, là où mon affreux cheval a si mal galopé. Et à la suite de la revue les militaires ont envahi les promenades.

We encounter him (Pietro) at the Borghese in a coloured coat and small hat, as if for riding. The poor little man was in a hired cab.

Nous le rencontrons (Pietro) à Borghése en habit de couleur et petit chapeau, comme pour monter à cheval. Le pauvre petit était en fiacre.

We saw Torlonia twice — at the Piazza del Popolo and at the Pincio. I assure you he is charming.

And there is the officer whom Lola called le dieu — Boy, a Russian. He is very handsome, this Boy, especially in a carriage, for he is not tall.

Have I said that we left our second-floor apartment to return to the ground-floor one — the one we had on first arriving in Rome? I believe I have not said it; no matter, I say it now. And today we leave the Hôtel de Londres entirely, on account of the bad air in Maman's and Dina's rooms. We have taken a very large and very fine apartment on the first floor of the Hôtel de la Ville, on the Via del Babuino. Ante-chamber, small salon, large salon, four bedrooms, studio, and two servants' rooms.

Ai-je dit que nous avons quitté notre appartement du deuxième étage pour reprendre celui du rez-de-chaussée, celui que nous avions en arrivant à Rome. Je crois que je ne l'ai pas dit, n'importe, je le dis à présent. Et aujourd'hui nous quittons tout à fait l'hôtel de Londres, à cause du mauvais air dans les chambres de maman et Dina. Nous avons pris un très grand et très bel appartement au premier à l'hôtel de la Ville, via del Babuino. Antichambre, petit salon, grand salon, quatre chambres à coucher, studio et deux chambres de domestiques.

In this same hotel lodges a family who left the Hôtel de Londres a few days before us — the Duchess Tricase Muliterno, her eldest daughter the Duchess of Sarno, her second daughter, unmarried, blonde and beautiful as an angel, and her son, young and rather plain, a great friend of the Dorias. Ils sont de Naples. A propos de Naples, maman me tourmente pour y aller, mais je n'en ai nulle envie à présent, j'irai en avril, au moment des courses, quand tout le monde ira.

Visconti comes to see us in our new apartment — but I am waiting for Antonelli, Antonelli who does not come. I wished to see him; his absence vexes me; I miss him. Dear Pietro — I truly believe I have a soft spot for him.

Visconti vient nous voir dans notre nouvel appartement mais j'attends Antonelli, Antonelli qui ne vient pas. J'avais envie de le voir, je suis contrariée par cette absence, il me manque. Gentil Pietro, je crois vraiment que j'ai un faible pour lui.

Why did he not come this evening? Does he not love me then, that other people can keep him away from me? I am almost uneasy — almost only, not even quite. I am sure of him, at least for the moment. Provided he does not make Torlonia his confidant — that would be very inconvenient for me.

Pourquoi n'est-il pas venu ce soir ? Il ne m'aime donc pas, que d'autres personnes peuvent le retenir loin de moi ? Je suis presque inquiète, presque seulement, pas même. Je suis sûre de lui du moins pour le moment. Pourvu qu'il n'aille pas faire de Torlonia son confident, ce me serait très incommode.

The magnetism of thought?³ Does it exist? And does it produce any effect? My thought is charged full of fluid — but I very much fear all this is in vain. Those I have no use for love me, while those I need do not give a damn about me. Torlonia is among the latter, I fear. What a pity. It would all be arranged and settled at once. One must not think of it — it is too beautiful; for then I should have nothing left to desire. As for love… bah! Why should I not love him?

Le magnétisme de la pensée ? Est-ce qu'il existe ? et produit-il un effet quelconque ? Ma pensée est toute chargée de fluide, mais je crains bien que cela c'est en vain. Ceux dont je n'ai que faire m'aiment, tandis que ceux qu'il me faut ne se fichent pas mal de moi. Torlonia est de ces derniers, je le crains. Quel dommage. Ce serait tout de suite arrangé et fini. Il ne faut pas penser à cela, c'est trop beau, alors je n'aurais plus rien à désirer. Quant à l'amour... bah ! pourquoi ne l'aimerais-je pas ?
