Tomorrow, Vigier1 will sing Faust at the Cercle de la Méditerranée.2

We go out together, Maman and I — the weather is bad, grey and cold; I have a slight headache and am very anxious about Nice. Neither letters nor telegrams. What has become of them all?

Nous sortons avec maman en deux, il fait mauvais temps, gris et froid, j'ai un peu mal à la tête et je suis très inquiète de Nice. Ni lettres, ni dépêches. Que sont-ils tous devenus ?

In the evening we telegram them asking the explanation of this strange silence. And we conjecture — floating between someone's death, Audiffret's marriage, or something still more grave.

Le soir nous leur télégraphions demandant l'explication de ce silence étrange. Et nous faisons des suppositions, et nous flottons entre la mort de quelqu'un, le mariage d'Audiffret, ou quelque chose de plus grave encore.

As for me, I pray to God all the same, and go to bed sad and bored, having copied [at least] two letters: one is the one about retrieving the soul; the other is the old Couronnement de la Rosière3 letter that has not been sent until now. One only had to change the dates, and I have fixed the ceremony for the 22nd of May — the feast of Saint Émile4 — and signed: Les citoyens de la ville de Nice, and below I have drawn in ink the arms of Nice, a crowned eagle on three hills with the inscription: Nicae Civitas.5

Quant à moi, je prie Dieu quand même et me couche triste et ennuyée après avoir copié, [au moins] deux lettres, l'une est celle où l'on retrouve l'âme, l'autre c'est l'ancien couronnement de la Rosière qui n'a pas été envoyée jusqu'à présent. Il n'y avait qu'à changer les dates, et j'ai fixé la cérémonie au 22 mai, jour du Saint-Emile et j'ai signé - Les citoyens de la ville de Nice et en dessous j'ai dessiné à l'encre les armes de Nice, un aigle couronné sur trois collines avec cette inscription: Nicae Civitas.
