I dreamed that le Surprenant's château had such wide windows that one could see the whole interior; then servants were carrying immense dishes — I asked why? I was told it was for Audiffret.
— But why are they carrying them into the garden?
— Because Audiffret is giving a dinner in a small pavilion.
And then one of the servants said:
— Do you not know that those who approach him to serve his food risk being beaten?
An absurdity that nevertheless makes me anxious, for we have had no news from Nice.
I was at church with Maman and Domenica. This woman is so vulgar that I am shocked at every moment. She is truly impossible when she speaks — I have never heard such a pronunciation in Russian. She is fifteen years older than her husband. Besides, there was a whole story about it, and it is only recently — that is to say for five or six years — that Papa permitted her to come.
Then we go to Mme de Reculât's and do not find her — she is at luncheon with her sister the Princess Gianetti, daughter of the Duchess of Valmy, as d'Épinay told me. De Daillens writes to me; she has been to the races and saw a Galula who spoke of me, "red as a cockerel."
At last at two o'clock we receive a telegram worded thus: All in good health, occupied arranging furniture arrived from Paris.
I breathe — no one is dead; I shall not wear black, then. As to other matters, I am not reassured — nor do I wish to be. I expect the most distressing things; in this way the trouble will seem less severe, at least I shall be prepared.
It hails; it is cold; I go nowhere — and this evening we go to the Opera, Ruy Blas. I laid out a réussite to find out whether Soroka would be present! The cards said yes.
O veracious prophets! Soroka was not at the theatre. I had only Lola and her mother with me. The boxes of the King's household and those of the hunting committee were full of opera-glasses [words blacked out: which directed themselves] frequently upon me — but Soroka was missing, and I was bored. Ruy Blas is a pretty opera.
— Marie, says Lola suddenly — Soroka, the real Soroka, has arrived!
And at once I was animated — but it was false; Soroka was not there. After the Opera and before the ballet, Rossi comes, and I chat with him in a very charming way, all the while thinking that at that very moment the Cercle de la Méditerranée is illuminated and crowded with fine dresses, and that Vigier is singing the role of Marguerite — the most charming role after Mignon.
And here I am mouldering in Rome, and despite all the promises I go nowhere. In Rome as everywhere — alone and wretched.

Notes

Réussite: a card-patience game, also used for fortune-telling.
Marguerite in Gounod's Faust — not to be confused with Mignon; Vigier was singing Faust at the Cercle de la Méditerranée.
