After Laussel, I go to Nina's, where Maman has taken refuge for the past two days. Her adorable brother would kill her at home. I am sure that if Grand-maman could foresee the horrors he commits and what Maman suffers, she would not have recommended him and would not beg us to look after him and keep him here.
Maman follows that recommendation to the letter, and has not a moment's peace.
The twilight was ravishing; I admired it from the balcony for as long as it lasted.
The half-serious, half-farcical manner in which I speak allows me to say everything.
I speak of nothing but the Devil — that is a fine subject indeed. Collignon told me at dinner that she knows Johnstone, having seen him at Cannes, and that he is married — and that his wife is an Englishwoman, short, pretentious, and plain.
What can such a woman matter to me? If she were beautiful, it would be another matter. That is what I told her. In any case she is mistaken — this Johnstone is not married. From my description she thought she recognised him in the man from Cannes.
But as I said — what can a plain little Englishwoman matter to me?
The Devil is the Devil in his own right. Proserpine did not prevent Pluto from carrying off Eurydice.

Notes

Marie conflates two myths: Pluto (Hades) abducted Proserpine (Persephone), while Eurydice was the wife of Orpheus. Whether this is error or deliberate conflation is uncertain.
