Dimanche, 7 mars 1875
I go for a little walk (white dress, black velvet hat — good). There are not many people about, that is to say there was nobody I know. By dint of never showing himself, Audiffer is making himself longed for, upon my word of honour.
Several times my eyes were flayed by the sight of my detestation. Scarcely back in the house and into my brown dress, Nadinka proposes going out; we take a cab and drive about until half past seven, and before going home we call at the Sapogenikoffs’ and find Pâris just off the boat. The house is overjoyed! They were about to come and share it with us; I take them all to dinner. Marie, Olga, Nadinka and I take each other by the hand and run like the madcaps we are down the rue de France — and on a Sunday evening, too; it makes me shudder. At last we arrive safe and sound, the others join us, we dine at full steam and I take everyone to the circus, after which I have supper and go to bed, tired, bored, dazed, thinking of “the animal I dare not name...”
