I go out on foot with the Italian woman; there is quite a crowd; Victor comes with me and this magnificent dog excited general admiration. Then I went for a walk with Maman; then I had lunch; and immediately afterwards went out in the carriage and did not return until four o'clock.

Je sors à pied avec l'Italienne, il y a beaucoup de monde, Victor m'accompagne et ce superbe chien *a excité* l'admiration générale. Ensuite je fis un tour à pied avec maman, ensuite je déjeunais et tout de suite après sortis en voiture et ne rentrai qu'à quatre heures.

Hélène has been launched into society — she was promenading with an elegant English lady and two gentlemen. God has given me a splendid idea: we shall stay here this winter, as best we can; in spring I shall go to Russia; in summer we shall spend some time in England or elsewhere; and in winter we shall go to Florence, where I shall study singing and painting, and go into society. The following winter we shall return here; during our absence the house will be built and everything arranged. Then I hope Nice will be more agreeable — and perhaps by then I shall no longer need it!

Hélène est lancée dans le monde, elle se promenait avec une dame anglaise, élégante et deux messieurs. Dieu m'a donné une belle idée: Nous resterons encore cet hiver ici, comme nous pourrons, au printemps j'irai en Russie, l'été nous passerons en Angleterre ou dans un autre endroit, et l'hiver nous irons à Florence, j'étudierai le chant, la peinture, et j'irai dans le monde. A l'hiver suivant nous reviendrons ici, pendant notre absence on bâtira et on arrangera tout. Alors j'espère Nice sera plus aimable, et alors peut-être je n'aurai plus besoin d'elle !

Madame and Mademoiselle Foster came at five o'clock, arriving from Paris. I was delighted to see them — they are well-bred and agreeable and appear to like us.

Mme et Mlle Foster sont venues à cinq heures, elles arrivent de Paris. J'étais enchantée de les voir, ce sont des gens comme il faut et aimables et paraissant nous aimer.

I am hoarse and wretched.

My plan is splendid — if God were willing to help me execute it, I should be very happy. Florence has a fine society, and for studies and pleasures alike I should be perfectly well there. Help me then, my God!

Mon projet est superbe si Dieu voulait m'aider à l'exécuter je serais fort heureuse. Il y a du beau monde à Florence et pour les études et pour les plaisirs j'y serais tout à fait bien. Aidez-moi donc, mon Dieu !
