I bathe with Lise and Katia; the second bath is more pleasant. But the people bathing jump like devils and make me laugh. I lunch at the Plage; Basilewsky is at a table not far from us. Doenhoff comes, then Basilewsky joins the conversation. If Basilevitch only knew!Lundi, 24 août 1874 Je me baigne avec Lise et Katia; le second bain est plus agréable. I have my hair down my back; brown dress and hat. We go to the pier -- nothing of note. Little Labanoff is there, and as we return she was walking behind and I had the advantage of hearing her small, broken voice carrying on a leaning sort of conversation.
J’ai mes cheveux sur le dos, robe et chapeau marron. Nous allons à l’estacade, rien de particulier. La petite Labanoff est là et comme nous retournons elle marchait derrière et j’eus l’avantage d’entendre sa petite voix brisée mener une conversation penchée.
Doenhoff comes home with us and stays rather long.
Doenhoff vient avec nous chez nous et reste assez longtemps.
A great annoyance befalls Maman. At six o’clock, as agreed, we, Basilevitch and Basilewsky were to dine at the Cercle des Bains. Barkowsky was to come and play. They took out my hairpins and I spent a long time doing my hair. Basilevitch went ahead with Dina. When I arrive with Maman, there is no one.
Il arrive pour maman un grand désagrément. A six heures, c’était convenu, nous, Basilévitch et Basilewsky, devions dîner au cercle des Bains. Barkowsky devait venir pour jouer. On m’a enlevé mes épingles à cheveux et je me suis longtemps coiffée. Basilévitch alla en avant avec Dina. Lorsque je viens avec maman, il n’y a personne.
Basilevitch has led Basilewsky off to the Hotel de l’Ocean to dine with the Gardeffs, and left Dina all alone -- who fortunately found the Tamancheffs.
Basilévitch a mené Basilewsky à l’hôtel de l’Océan dîner avec les Gardeff, et a laissé Dina toute seule qui a heureusement trouvé les Tamancheff.
Maman is in despair at having missed this dinner with Basilewsky. She has all sorts of ideas.
Maman est au désespoir d’avoir manqué ce dîner avec Basilewsky. Elle a toutes sortes d’idées.
At last, after several tussles which I endure with all due dignity, we sit down to table at the Kursaal cafe while the music plays.
Enfin après plusieurs tiraillements que je supporte avec toute la dignité voulue nous nous mettons à table au Kursaal, au café, pendant que joue la musique.
Maman in her despair eats only an omelette and a cup of chocolate. The Tamancheffs arrive with Dina. They are kind and I shall miss them. They leave the day after tomorrow.
Maman de désespoir ne mange qu’une omelette et une tasse de chocolat. Viennent les Tamancheff avec Dina. Ils sont gentils et je les regrette. Ils partent après-demain.
To be with them I go to the Cercle des Bains. Baron Leiss asks me to dance; I introduce him to Maman. “Well, well, if y’ please1?” There is his conversation.
Pour être avec eux je vais au cercle des Bains. Le baron Leiss me fait danser, je le présente à maman. Tiens, tiens si’ plaît [sic] ? Voilà sa conversation.
We stay until the end.
Nous restons jusqu’à la fin.
