I forgot to say that yesterday I went into town several times and met this princess, and even once Doria. I turned my head away because I was in the brown dress and hat, with hair hanging down. I had the idea it did not suit me. Basilevitch comes with her children; we go to the confectionery. I struggle to tear Maman away for the pier; Basilevitch holds her back because Doenhoff arrives today from London and she wants, as on a previous occasion, to prevent us from going on the seawall. We arrive too late; at the beginning, I see the Plobsters returning, Doria too.
J’oubliai de dire que hier j’ai plusieurs fois été en ville, et rencontré cette princesse et même une fois Doria. J’ai détourné la tête parce que j’étais en la robe marron et chapeau, les cheveux pendants. J’avais idée que cela m’allait mal, Basilévitch vient avec ses enfants, nous allons à la confiserie, j’ai peine à arracher maman pour aller à l’estacade, Basilévitch la retient parce que Doenhoff arrive aujourd’hui de Londres et qu’elle veut empêcher comme une fois d’aller sur la digue. Nous arrivons trop tard, au commencement, je vois les Plobsters qui retournent, Doria aussi.
It is cold; I am in a jacket over the white dress, yellow boots. Maman proposes we stay to play cards (my aunt is in Brussels until tomorrow) and dine at the Kursaal. We enter opposite the cafe, and Plobster is standing there. I enter without looking, I lower my eyes -- otherwise I should laugh. As I expected, he turned so as not to lose sight of me for an instant. They give us a table right at the entrance, but the wretched Mulinare flees. I soon tire of playing cards and tell fortunes.
Il fait froid, je suis en jaquette sur la robe blanche, bottines jaunes. Maman propose de rester jouer aux cartes, (ma tante est à Bruxelles jusqu’à demain) et dîner au Kursaal. Nous entrons vis-à-vis le café et Plobster se tient là. J’entre sans regarder, je baisse les yeux; autrement je rirais. Comme je pensais il se tournait pour ne pas me perdre de vue un instant. On nous donne une table tout au commencement mais le misérable Mulinare se sauve. Je m’ennuie bientôt à jouer et fais la bonne aventure.

For the first time I sat for a while at the Kursaal concert. Before the end, Paul comes to say the marquise has arrived. We rise and go to find her. To my right (I have my back to the piano and my right hand rests on the table which is against the piano) are the marquise and Countess Merjeewsky; to my left, Basilewsky, beside him Maman, then Dina, Merjeewsky and Basilevitch. With Basilewsky one is so peaceful, so at ease. He is a good man, but a priest3. Basilevitch towards the end can restrain herself no longer and comes to place herself between Maman and Basilewsky. She would like his money, but he does not want her. She does it in the most visible way and hides nothing. All at once in comes Plobster and seats himself with some people to the right.
A ma droite (je tourne le dos au piano et ma main droite est appuyée sur la table qui est contre le piano) sont la marquise et la comtesse Merjeewsky, à ma gauche Basilewsky, à côté de lui maman, puis Dina, Merjeewsky et Basilévitch. Avec Basilewsky on est si tranquille, si à son aise. C’est un homme bon, mais un pope. Basilévitch vers la fin n’y tient plus et vient se mettre entre maman et Basilewsky. Elle voudrait son argent, mais il ne la veut pas. Elle fait cela d’une façon toute visible et ne cache rien. Tout à coup entre Plobster et se place avec des personnes à droite.
All evening we have beautiful music; a lady and a gentleman played very well. At the end a Russian played -- Barkowsky, a lawyer and self-made man4 -- very well, like an artist.
Toute la soirée nous avons de la belle musique, une dame et un monsieur ont très bien joué. A la fin a joué un Russe Barkowsky, avocat et homme nouveau très bien, en artiste.
Plobster stares at my ear and speaks of me to a lady and to some men.
Plobster regarde mon oreille et parle de moi à une dame et à des hommes.
He cannot be much at bottom, but as he is, he amuses.

He is, as they said, a show-off and a poseur. I said this to Maman; she says that perhaps not.
