There is a children's ball before the kiosk on the promenade.

Il y a bal d'enfants devant le kiosque de l'allée.

We went there (canvas dress, Massa hat, good). Already a good number of people were installed before the platform; Mme Basilevitch had not arrived; the little fright Gridano, a Romanian introduced to us yesterday, bored me by remaining with us. I went with Paul to fetch Basilevitch. [Crossed out: and her children] I found her finishing her toilette; we came back with the children -- I held the little girl by the hand and Paul carried the baby in his arms, a boy of a year and a half.

Nous y allâmes (robe toile, chapeau Massa, bien). Déjà bon nombre de personnes était installé devant l'estrade, Mme Basilévitch n'arrivait pas, le petit laideron Gridano, un Roumain présenté à nous hier m'ennuyait en restant avec nous. J'allai avec Paul chercher Basilévitch [Rayé: et ses enfants ] Je la trouvai finissant sa toilette, nous revînmes avec les enfants, je tenais par la main la petite fille et Paul portait dans ses bras le bébé, un garçon de un an et demi.

We escorted these interesting persons, giving each one a gentleman and a lady.

Nous avons conduit ces intéressantes personnes en leur donnant à chacun un cavalier et une dame.

I noticed at this moment a gentleman insipidly handsome, with a Mephistophelean air, who was looking at me; then he came to greet Basilevitch, who introduced him to me -- the Chevalier de Neufarge. Illegitimate son of a Russian prince who bequeathed him a great fortune, which this beauty squandered by half. I returned with Basilevitch and this gentleman to sit with our party, to whom the introduction was repeated.

Je remarquai en ce moment un monsieur fadement beau, et à l'air méphistophélès qui me regardait, puis il vint saluer Basilévitch qui me le présenta, le chevalier de Neufarge. Fils bâtard d'un prince russe qui lui légua une grande fortune, que cette beauté gaspilla à moitié. Je revins avec Basilévitch et ce monsieur m'asseoir auprès des nôtres auquels la présentation fut répétée.

This gentleman spoke very lightly to Basilevitch, played even more lightly on words, and said that Spa was her husband's training ground. He is well dressed, but he must be some sort of neutral being and a species of adventurer. My suspicions were confirmed in the evening; they spoke so ill of him that Basilevitch was nearly in despair at having introduced him, and did not know whether she should dance with him -- to refuse him is to lose the right to dance with others.

Ce monsieur a parlé très légèrement à Basilévitch, a joué encore plus légèrement sur les mots et dit que Spa était la piste d'entraînement de votre mari. Il est bien mis mais ce doit être un être neutre et une espèce de chevalier d'industrie. Mes suppositions se confirmèrent le soir, on en a tant mal parlé que Basilévitch était presque au désespoir de l'avoir présenté, et ne savait si elle devait danser avec lui, lui refuser c'est n'avoir plus le droit de danser avec d'autres.

Everyone says he has a bad reputation; when one asks what? how? they keep silent. And Kirch this evening, while treating us to lemonade, told Basilevitch that she should not ask what reputation the man has. This gentleman chooses the moment when he is treating, as a rule, to gossip.

Tout le monde dit qu'il a une mauvaise réputation, quand on demande *quoi* ? comment ? on garde le silence et Kirch ce soir en nous régalant de limonade dit à Basilévitch qu'il ne fallait pas demander quelle réputation il a. Ce monsieur choisit le moment où il régale, généralement pour *cancaner*.

In the evening Walitsky escorted me to the promenade, where I stayed with Basilevitch and Princess Eristoff (another one born a merchant's daughter; loose, and wants to divorce herself in order to marry a Body).

Le soir Walitsky me conduisit jusqu'à l'allée où je restai avec Basilévitch, la princesse Eristoff (encore une née marchande; légère et veut se divorcer pour épouser un Body).

I find myself very badly surrounded. A short time after, the little Pole arrives, seats himself beside me, and we talk music. He is a musician. (I fear I am repeating or skipping, for I write today, Saturday; every evening some impediment arose.)

Je me trouve très mal entourée. Peu de temps après arrive le petit Polonais, se met à côté de moi et nous causons musique. Il est musicien (je crains de répéter ou de passer, car j'écris aujourd'hui samedi, tous les soirs quelque empêchement survenait).

I never look him in the face, so as to make it appreciated when I do look. I speak with eyes lowered or fixed upon some point. I refused all the dances, and the count did not dance either, while telling me that he adores dancing. He gave me to understand that he wishes to dance only with me. It is very amiable, and I believe this boy will amuse me; only he is so young -- I do not like puppies.1

Je ne le regarde jamais en face, pour faire apprécier lorsque je regarde. Je parle les yeux baissés ou fixés sur quelque point. Je refusai toutes les danses, et le comte ne dansait pas, tout en me disant qu'il adore la danse. Il me fit comprendre qu'il ne veut danser qu'avec moi. C'est très aimable, et je crois que ce garçon m'amusera, seulement il est si jeune, je n'aime pas les *puppies.*

When all is said and done, the Englishman is still the best (when there is no fish, the crayfish is a fish).

Au bout du compte l'Anglais est encore le meilleur (*quand on a pas de poisson, l'écrevisse est un poisson*).

Then the conversation took a delicate turn:

-- However, Pygmalion animated the statue, said I.

- Cependant Pygmalion anima la statue dis-je.

-- Yes, but I do not love the beauty of statues; I love living beauty, that thinks, that feels. I love spiritual beauty, inquiring beauty (he stressed the word, looking at me; I smiled -- I should not have).

- Oui, mais je n'aime [pas] la beauté des statues, j'aime la beauté vivante, qui pense, qui sent, j'aime la beauté spirituelle, *curieuse* (appuyé et me regardant, je souris, il ne fallait pas).

M. de Neufarge was posing at the entrance.
