Lundi, 22 juin 1874

This will be a little difficult: since Monday the 22nd I have written nothing, and many things have happened -- the most important being that we are no longer in Paris. Today, Wednesday the 24th of June, we are in Spa, at the Hotel de l'Europe. But before arriving at where we are, there are several things to say.

Voilà qui sera un peu difficile, depuis lundi 22 je n'ai rien écrit, et bien des choses se sont passées, la plus importante est celle que nous ne sommes plus à Paris, aujourd'hui mercredi 24 juin nous sommes à Spa, à l'hôtel de l'Europe. Mais avant d'arriver où nous sommes il y a plusieurs choses à dire.

Monday the 22nd, we went to town as every day; I remember only the visit to Caroline's -- that is, Laferriere's -- and then that Rodionoff dined with us, that Dusautoy had come and neither remade nor mended my riding habit (besides, it would have been a miracle -- he had been paid two weeks ago). Then that we went to the Champs-Elysees in the evening. The next day, the day of departure, we went to English Hats1; I bought a jockey cap in black velvet, then went for a fitting at Caroline's. She was very amiable, admitted that she loved gambling passionately, and that yesterday she became a grandmother for the second time.

Lundi 22, nous allâmes en ville comme tous les jours, je ne me souviens que de la visite chez Caroline, c'est-à-dire chez Laferrière, et ensuite que Rodionoff a dîné chez nous, que Dusautoy était venu et n'a ni refait ni arrangé mon amazone, d'ailleurs c'eût été miracle, il était depuis deux semaines payé. Ensuite que nous allâmes le soir aux Champs-Elysées. Le lendemain jour de départ, nous allâmes chez English Hats, j'ai acheté une calotte de jockey en velours noir, puis essayer chez Caroline, elle était très aimable, avoua qu'elle aimait passionnément le jeu, et que hier elle est devenue pour la deuxième fois grand-mère.

I have at last my pink dress, which is really very pretty. We -- or rather I -- leave several orders in Paris, for want of money and time, but I gave notice that I should write as soon as I arrived saying where to send them. This is what I shall do.

J'ai enfin ma robe rose qui est vraiment très jolie. Nous, ou plutôt, je laisse plusieurs commandes à Paris, faute d'argent et de temps, mais j'ai prévenu en disant que j'écrirai aussitôt arrivée où il faut envoyer. C'est ce que je ferai.
