I learn a fine story: Paul had taken his watch case to sell it; the man came to ask whether he should hand over the money; Maman forbade him. I was very frightened at first, not knowing what it meant. My yellow hat bores me terribly; I am in a bad humor on account of it. At five o'clock we go out. I so detest going out as we do, walking step by step along the boulevards, not knowing where one is going or what one will do. And then I am greatly humiliated to be within range of the often impertinent stares of all those men at the cafes; often I should like to thrash the scoundrels.

J'apprends une belle histoire, Paul avait porté la boîte de sa montre pour la vendre, cet homme est venu demander s'il devait donner de l'argent, maman le lui défendit. J'étais très effrayée d'abord, ne sachant pas ce que ça voulait dire. Mon chapeau jaune m'ennuie terriblement, j'en suis de mauvaise humeur. A cinq heures nous sortons, je déteste tant sortir comme nous le faisons, pour aller pas à pas sur les boulevards, ne sachant où on va, ce qu'on fera. Et puis je suis fort humiliée d'être à la portée des regards souvent impertinents de tous ces hommes des cafés, souvent je voudrais les rosser, ces faquins.

I do not know how it happened -- I said nothing extraordinary -- but my mother bolted and ran across the boulevard and the rue de la Paix to the hotel. I returned calmly with the rest and told her she may make all the scenes she likes, that nothing will astonish or distress me. Thereupon she went off, but came back after ten minutes. Then I went out with her; we went to Virot's, then, picking up the rest and taking [Crossed out: a cab] a carriage, to Worth's for further explanations. Besides, I believe it is all well settled; they apologize nicely, and may God be with them, for I am keen to return to their house.

Je ne sais comment cela se fit, je n'ai rien dit d'extraordinaire, mais ma mère s'élança et courut à travers le boulevard et la rue de la Paix à l'hôtel. Je rentrai calmement avec le reste et lui dis qu'elle peut faire tous les scandales qu'elle voudra, que rien ne m'étonnera ni ne me désespérera. Sur cela elle s'en alla, mais s'en revint au bout de dix minutes. Alors je sortis avec elle, nous allâmes chez Virot, puis reprenant le reste, et prenant [Rayé: un fiacre] une voiture chez Worth pour d'autres explications. D'ailleurs je crois tout bien fini, ils s'excusent bien et que le bon Dieu soit avec eux, car je tiens à revenir chez eux.

We go along the Champs-Elysees when Fedus passes as the other day. Maman said: He is delighted and he looks as if he were seeing relatives.1 He did not turn a hundred times, for I could see him, being in the front. We saw the young Souvoroff on horseback; she bowed with a great many smiles, and one of her cavaliers bowed to me three times, smiling. He looked foolish and shy and was no doubt not mistaken.

Nous allons par les Champs-Elysées lorsque Fedus passe comme l'autre jour. Maman a dit: *Il se réjouit et il regarde comme s'il voyait des parents*. Il ne s'est pas tourné cent fois car je pouvais le voir étant sur le devant. Nous vîmes la petite Souvoroff à cheval, elle salua avec force sourires et un de ses cavaliers me salua trois fois et souriant, il avait l'air bête et timide et ne se trompait sans doute.

Then Maman had the carriage stop in front of the Morenos', sent for him; he came down and invited us up, which we did. Matildita was very pleased to see me. We touched on everything lightly. The failed Don Juan is always the same; Madame is amiable, but perhaps it is only an idea of mine -- I believe she is still jealous of Maman. Besides, everything went very well. It was not Remy the other evening at the theater.

Alors maman fit arrêter la voiture devant Moreno, le fit demander, il descendit, nous engagea à monter, ce que nous fîmes. Matildita a été très contente de me voir, nous avons tout effleuré, M. Don Juan manqué est toujours le même, Madame est aimable mais peut-être c'est une idée que j'ai, je crois qu'elle [est] encore jalouse de maman. D'ailleurs tout a été très bien. Ce n'était pas Rémy l'autre soir au théâtre.

The Grand Prix is not tomorrow.
