It is eleven o'clock at night; I have just left Maman. We were saying that it is unfortunate to live as we do, that there are no young men in Nice, etc., etc. I was saying that there are some... etc.

Il est onze heures du soir, je quitte à l'instant maman, nous disions que c'est malheureux de vivre comme nous vivons, qu'il n'y a pas de jeunes gens à Nice, etc. etc. Je disais qu'il y en a... etc.

We were with the deacon at Smith's. Two hours were spent choosing fabrics, woods, gildings, paintings, etc., etc. This dear deacon who puts on such a grand display, as Vas. Ossip. Howard says. He is ridiculous, this deacon, with his grand airs.

Nous étions avec le diacre chez Smith. Deux heures se passent à choisir les étoffes, les bois, les dorures, les peintures, etc. etc. Ce cher diacre qui fait du ★grand jeu* comme dit *Vas., Ossip.* Howard. Il est ridicule ce *diacre* avec ses grand airs.

Today I met nobody interesting.

Aujourd'hui je n'ai rencontré personne d'intéressant.

How wretched I am when I am not properly dressed.

Tomorrow they are presenting "Bagatelle" at the Bouffes, with Judic -- a new work by Offenbach. Not a single seat, alas!

On donne demain aux Bouffes "Bagatelle" avec Judic, nouvelle œuvre d'Offenbach. Pas une seule place, hélas !

Dinner with the deacon, then an hour of driving, then home. The two Strikers called. The elder is engaged; he will wait two years -- the young lady is the same age as he, seventeen. ^[In English in the original.]

Dîner avec le diacre puis une heure de driving, puis home. Les deux Striker called. L'aîné is engaged, il attendra deux ans, la demoiselle a le même âge que lui, dix-sept ans.

I love Paris so much; it is so beautiful. I see that one can love a city for itself.

J'aime tant Paris, il est si beau. Je vois qu'on peut aimer une ville pour elle-même.

Until now, Paris is the most beautiful, the most graceful, and the most congenial thing I have seen.

Jusqu'à présent Paris est ce que j'ai vu de plus beau, de plus gracieux et de plus sympathique.

[Crossed out: What will it give me] In fact, I have nothing to give, but how I should like to live in Paris -- not as a foreigner as at present, oh no! that would be too sad -- but to live in Paris as I wish. This life of streets and shops bores me; it is not my style.

[Rayé: Que me donnera] Au fait, je n'ai rien à donner, mais que je voudrais demeurer à Paris pas en étrangère comme à présent oh non ! ce serait trop triste, mais demeurer à Paris *comme j'aime.* Cette vie de rues, de magasins m'ennuie, ce n'est pas mon genre.
