It is truly annoying -- until now I have not found a hat.

C'est ennuyeux vraiment, jusqu'à présent je n'ai pas trouvé un chapeau.

Going to the Champs-Elysees has become a necessity for me, and we do not go every day.

Aller aux Champs-Elysées est devenu un besoin pour moi, et nous n'y allons pas tous les jours.

I saw Gioia again on the day of the races, on the way back.

J'ai encore revu Gioia le jour des courses au retour.

We go to the Gaite to see "Orphee aux Enfers," which has just been transformed into an opera-bouffe-feerie. The theater itself is very pretty; the boxes are comfortable (which is rare here) and graceful -- and alas! no boxes! I was in the dress circle with a dreadful hat. Oh!!!

Nous allons à la Gaîté voir "Orphée aux enfers" qui vient d'être transformé en opéra bouffe-féerie. Le théâtre par lui-même est très joli, les loges sont commodes (ce qui est rare ici) et gracieuses et hélas ! pas de loges ! J'étais sur le balcon avec un affreux chapeau. Oh !!!

The staging and the costumes and the performers leave nothing to be desired (except Cupid, who could be better).

La mise en scène et les costumes, et les artistes ne laissent rien à désirer (excepté Cupidon, qui pourrait être mieux).

The effects and the tableaux are admirable; in short, everything is beautiful, and it is a true fairy-opera.

Les effets et les tableaux sont admirables, enfin tout est beau et c'est une véritable féerie - opéra-bouffe.

The costumes please me so much! There. I would give balls with costumes like that, but they are unfortunately too low-cut (which is what makes them adorable), and people would cry scandal -- especially the old women, the broomsticks.

Les costumes me plaisent tant ! Voilà. Je donnerais des bals avec des costumes comme cela, mais ils sont malheureusement trop décolletés (c'est ce qui les rend adorables) et on crierait au scandale, surtout les vieilles, les manches à balai.

One could indeed give them, but in the following way: one would organise a society where one would admit members with oaths and tests of discretion, like the Freemasons. One would take great care to accept only beautiful people, or at least those wishing to be beautiful. And then one would initiate them. At bottom there is nothing wrong in it, but I doubt the secret would be kept. How beautiful it would be. These costumes are so becoming, so graceful, so adorable. This society is a foolish unrealisable [sic] idea, but I alone, at home, for myself, I shall absolutely adopt the costume of Venus in "Orphee." At home, when I am alone, no one will see me.

On pourrait bien les donner mais voilà de quelle façon. On organiserait une société où l'on admetterait avec des serments et des épreuves de discrétion, comme les francs-maçons. On aurait grand soin de n'accepter que les gens beaux ou tout au moins voulant être beau. Et puis ont les initierait. Au fond il n'y a rien de mal mais je doute que le secret soit gardé. Comme ce serait beau. Ces costumes sont si seyants, si gracieux, si adorables. Cette société c'est une bêtise *irréalisible* [sic] mais moi seule, chez moi, pour moi je prendrai absolument le costume de Vénus dans "Orphée". Chez moi, quand je serai seule, personne ne me verra.

I wager that if everyone were well made, no one would say anything against these costumes, and after all it is not really too indecent. It is so beautiful!

Je parie que si tout le monde était bien fait on ne dirait rien contre ces costumes, et après tout ce n'est déjà pas trop inconvenant. C'est si beau !

The house was very respectable. With satisfaction I saw there Baron de Rothschild, the one who was in Nice.

La salle était très comme il faut. Avec satisfaction j'y vis le baron de Rothschild, celui qui était à Nice.
