[Lundi, 23 février 1874]

We all go to Monte Carlo, all except Stiopa and Machenka (the Ferry boots arrived this morning -- good).

[Nous allons tous à Monte-Carlo, tous excepté Stiopa et Machenka, (les bottines Ferry sont arrivées ce matin, bien).]

The sun is blazing, the olive trees grey, the earth red -- it nearly made me weep. My God! There are many dogs, not one that I like.

[Le soleil est ardent, les oliviers gris, la terre rouge, cela m'a presque fait pleurer. Mon Dieu ! Il y a beaucoup de chiens, pas un comme j'aime.]

I won little by little a hundred and fifty francs, which I lend to Maman. At six o'clock we -- that is, Paul, Dina and I -- set off. M. Potemkine comes with us, the newlywed. We chat and laugh on the journey. A rather dirty Russian was holding himself back from laughing, for we were saying very droll things, especially about travelling in Russia and false reports. We drive him home.

[J'ai gagné peu à peu cent cinquante francs que je prête à maman. A six heures nous moi, Paul et Dina partons. M. Potemkine vient avec nous, le nouveau marié. Nous causons et rions en voyage. Un Russe assez sale se retenait pour ne pas rire, car nous disions des choses très drôles, sur les voyages en Russie et les faux rapports surtout. Nous le conduisons chez lui.]

On entering the gaming room Maman was immediately surrounded by Berr, two Potemkines, Bach -- but she does not know how to hold back.

[En entrant dans la salle de jeu maman était tout de suite entourée par Berr, deux Potemkine, Bach mais elle ne sait pas retenir.]

In the evening we play at roulette, which I have just purchased. I held the bank and won eight francs.

[Le soir nous jouons à la roulette que je viens d'acheter. Je tenais la banque et j'ai gagné huit francs.]
