We ride on horseback, Dina and I. This Dina spoiled the ride for me at first, but toward the end all went very well.

Nous montons à cheval, moi et Dina. Cette Dina m'a au commencement gâté la promenade, mais vers la fin tout allait très bien.

I had warned her that her hair would fall; I even told her she wanted to make an impression -- and indeed after a minute of trotting it fell. It would have been nothing if she had paid no attention to it (as she ought, since she expected it), but she found herself embarrassed and repented, I think, of this effect. We come back; she fixes herself, and from then on all goes well; she even trotted quite well.

Je l'avais prévenue que ses cheveux tomberont, je lui dis même qu'elle voulait faire de l'effet, et en effet après une minute de trot ils tombèrent. Ce ne serait encore rien si elle n'y faisait pas attention (comme ce devrait être puisqu'elle s'y attendait) mais elle s'en trouva gênée et se repentit je crois de cet effet. Nous rentrons , elle s'arrange et depuis, tout va bien; elle a même trotté assez bien.

Those Galve dresses do not leave me a moment's peace -- that is to say, I am extremely vexed and enraged by them.

Ces robes des Galve ne me laissent pas un moment en repos, c'est-à-dire que j'en suis extrêmement fâchée et enragée.

I stay the whole evening (as tomorrow is Christmas) with Maman, who is unwell; she lies on my aunt's bed and I warm her feet. Two hours pass thus; I heard them strike. The thought of those dresses will not leave me; I am in despair. We chat quietly, partly about these dresses. After the duke, what I regret most is this dress; I waver between the two.

Je reste toute la soirée (comme demain c'est Noël) avec maman qui n'est pas bien; elle est couchée sur le lit de ma tante et moi je lui chauffe les pieds. Deux heures se passent ainsi, je les entendais sonner. La pensée des robes ne me quitte pas, je suis au désespoir. Nous causons tranquillement, une partie de ces robes. Après le duc ce que je regrette le plus c'est cette robe, je balance entre les deux.

Papa comes with his alarms over Maman's health and his agitation, which enrage me; then Bete returns from Monaco. My aunt, Dina and Hitchcock at the theatre.

Vient Papa avec ses alarmes pour la santé de maman et son agitation qui m'enragent, puis Bête revient de Monaco. Ma tante, Dina et Hitchcock au théâtre.

Maman is very charmed with me; I was gentle and charming, etc. etc. I prevent those scoundrels from inventing terrors, hot water bottles and all sorts of nonsense. Maman goes to bed in her own room; I with her.

Maman est très charmée de moi, j'étais douce et charmante etc. etc. J'empêche ces canailles d'inventer des terreurs, des bouteilles chaudes et toutes sortes de bêtises. Maman se couche chez elle, moi avec.

They return from the theatre; they bring Pitou, and I take my leave.

On revient du théâtre, on apporte Pitou et je m'en vais.

My aunt said aloud at luncheon that I have won a victory over a gentleman -- that he is always looking, that at the exit yesterday he stood near us staring and staring, that it was Lambertye.

Ma tante a dit à haute voix à déjeuner que moi j'ai remporté une victoire sur un monsieur, que il regarde toujours, que à la sortie hier, il était debout près de nous il regardait et regardait, que c'était Lambertye.
