Tuesday, 17 June 1873

I woke rather late at nine, and learned that Mme Sapogenikoff spent the night at our house — that they arrived, Maman, my aunt, and Mme Sapogenikoff, at one in the morning, and talked until daylight. I was in my bed when she came to kiss me, saying she wanted to see me as I had seen her yesterday. We had tea at nearly eleven, all together. Mme Sapogenikoff recounted all her anonymous letters, slanders, troubles, etc. etc. She has a real Tolstoy over there. An hour after the second breakfast, at two, she left, accompanied by Maman and the others, to the station. Walitsky had procured her some money; he ran about all morning.

Je me suis éveillée un peu tard à neuf heures et j'ai appris que Mme Sapogenikoff a passé la nuit chez nous, qu'elles sont arrivées, maman, ma tante et Mme Sapogenikoff à une heure et ont encore causé jusqu'à la lumière. J'étais dans mon lit lorsqu'elle est venue m'embrasser disant qu'elle voulait me voir comme je l'ai vue hier. Nous avons pris le thé presque à onze heures tous ensemble. Mme Sapogenikoff racontait toutes ses lettres anonymes, calomnies, misères, etc. etc. Elle a une vraie Tolstoy là-bas. Une heure après le deuxième déjeuner à deux, elle partit accompagnée de maman etc. à la gare. Walitsky lui a procuré de l'argent, il courut toute la matinée.

We stayed at home. I spent all the time until the Howards' arrival doing my hair. Only Hélène and Lise came. I reproached them for leaving Aggie and the boys behind, but they had a lesson (grey batiste dress, good). Before dinner we stayed in the garden. I threw the monkey into the water and watched him swim — for the first time. We dined; afterwards we played croquet. I used it for the first time today. Only one game; it lasted rather long, for I had difficulty playing well on the gravel. Then they brought the ices to the garden. After a few turns round the garden, Maman asked us to come inside; I obeyed, but I came in by the longest way.

Nous restâmes à la maison. J'ai employé tout le temps jusqu'à l'arrivée des Howard à me coiffer. Hélène et Lise seules vinrent. J'ai fait des reproches pour avoir laissé Aggie et les garçons mais ils avaient une leçon, (robe grise batiste, bien). Avant dîner nous restions au jardin. J'ai jeté le singe dans l'eau et je le vis nager, pour la première fois. On dîna, après nous avons joué au croquet, je l'ai *étrenné* aujourd'hui. Une seule partie, ça a duré assez longtemps, car j'avais de la peine à bien jouer sur des cailloux. Puis on apporta les glaces au jardin. Après quelques tours de jardin maman nous a priés de rentrer, j'obéis, mais je rentrais par le plus long chemin.

We stayed a little longer in a room without candles, in the twilight, when Mme Howard arrived. And still she stayed a quarter of an hour before the children departed. I had a good time, on the whole.

Nous restâmes encore quelque temps dans une chambre sans bougies, *dans le crépuscule*, lorsque vint Mme Howard. Et encore elle est restée un quart d'heure avant que les enfants partent. Je me suis bien amusée en somme.

I was very pale — and I have been for a long time; I am becoming ugly. They scolded me today because I am pale and have bags under my eyes. Is it my fault? And would I not give anything to be rosy and pretty? It is these triple emotions: the lost time, the missed lessons, the desire to learn, the anxiousness1 to know if I shall meet him, if he will love me. All this exhausts me to the highest degree.

J'étais très pâle, et je le suis depuis longtemps, je deviens laide. On m'a grondé aujourd'hui parce que je suis pâle et j'ai des sacs sous les yeux. Est-ce ma faute ? Et ne donnerais-je pas tout pour être rose et jolie ? Ce sont ces triples émotions; le temps perdu, les leçons manquées, le désir d'apprendre, l'anxiousness pour savoir si je le connaîtrai, s'il m'aimera. Tout cela m'épuise au plus haut degré.
