At church (grey batiste dress — well) — I do not much like this dress. There was hardly anyone. The Grand Duchess was at church for the first time in two months perhaps. The Tolstoys were there, the scoundrels! How she is not ashamed, after having received slaps. We took Mme Anitchkoff and went home. (At church we saw the Howard children and a few other people.)

A l'église (robe grise en batiste, bien) je n'aime pas beaucoup cette robe. Il n'y avait presque personne. La grande-duchesse était à l'église pour la première fois depuis deux mois peut être. Les *Tolstoy* étaient là les canailles ! Comment elle n'a pas honte après avoir reçu des soufflets. Nous prîmes Mme Anitchkoff et nous sommes allés à la maison. (A l'église nous avons vu les enfants Howard et encore quelques personnes).

Without waiting for breakfast, Maman went to the station — and I too, to buy cucumbers. But instead, I went to Monaco with Maman and Lefevre to persuade Georges to come to Nice. We got off at Monaco, and having taken a cab, we drove directly to the house where George lives.1

Sans attendre le déjeuner maman est allée à la gare, moi aussi, pour acheter des concombres, mais au lieu de ça, je suis allée à Monaco avec maman et Lefèvre pour persuader Georges de venir à Nice. Nous descendîmes à Monaco et ayant pris un fiacre we drove directly to the house where George lives.

A small, poor room, another beside it for the servant, and a dining room serving as a drawing room when needed — that is what we found. Anna was there. En sortant, j'ai tendu la main à Anna et elle l'a embrassée. J'étais très confuse, ne savais que faire. Je l'ai embrassée. Georges nous accompagna quelques pas. Il a parlé du prince de Monaco, du fils, de sa femme, je pensais, je voulais que la conversation touche Hamilton. Mais Georges s'est borné à dire que *il est marié à Hamilton*.

We went by cab to the casino. Now one must have a personal card to enter. And when we went in, the salons were clean, swept of all the riffraff, the cocottes, etc. etc. One felt as in a respectable drawing room — one felt at ease. But it is a little monotonous. With those people it was more lively, and I preferred Monaco then. A gambling house must be a gambling house, and nothing more! Now it is too genteel — but it pleases me better; it is noble. Maman won about three hundred francs, and I thirty.

Nous sommes allées en fiacre jusqu'au casino. Maintenant, il faut avoir une carte personnelle pour entrer. Et quand nous sommes entrées, les salons étaient propres, nettoyés de toute cette canaille, des cocottes etc. etc. On était comme dans un salon comme il faut, on se sentait à son aise. Mais c'est un peu monotone. Avec ces personnes c'est plus animé et j'aimais mieux Monaco alors. Une maison de jeux doit être une maison de jeux, et rien de plus ! Maintenant c'est trop tiré, mais cela me plaît mieux, c'est noble. Maman a gagné trois cents francs à peu près et moi trente francs.

Solominka and Walitsky are here. The latter has been trying to persuade Georges since ten o'clock.

We returned without result but not without hope. From the station Maman went to the lawyer Malausséna about her case, for in the speech of the Tolstoys' lawyer she was named.

Nous nous en retournâmes sans résultat mais pas sans espérance. De la gare maman est allée chez l'avocat Malausséna pour son affaire, car dans le discours de l'avocat des Tolstoy elle était nommée.

My aunt is better and soon, I hope, we go to Vienna. Oh! my God, help me in this — let me go to Vienna!

Ma tante va mieux et bientôt j'espère nous allons à Vienne. Oh ! mon Dieu, aide-moi en cela, fais-moi aller à Vienne !
